Negative Numbers Positive Numbers Negative numbers are the numbers less than zero (or to the left on the number line) Positive numbers are the numbers greater than zero (or to the right on the number line) -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4

What are integers? Integers are considered a “family” of numbers. They are all whole numbers that are positive, negative, or zero!!

Opposite Numbers! Opposite numbers are numbers that are the same distance away from zero in opposite directions… -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6

Let’s try addition with colored chips! 1 + (-1) = ? A RED paper will be worth one negative and a YELLOW paper will be worth one positive. ? ZERO! A positive and a negative cancel each other out! 0

-3 + 4 = ? Three of the negatives cancel out with three of the positives, leaving us with one positive. So the answer is 1! +1

-4 + 7 = ? Four of the negatives cancel out with four of the positives, leaving us with three positives. So the answer is 3! 3

13+ -16 = ? 13+ -16 = ? Three of the positives cancel out with three of the negatives, leaving us with three negatives. So the answer is -3! -3

-2 + -3 = ? Nothing cancels!! If you combine two negatives and three negatives, then you are left with five negatives. So the answer is -5! -5

When we add, the sign of the bigger numbers wins!! 5 + -3 = Five is bigger than three. Five is positive so our answer will be positive! 2
