Medication Training Learning Outcomes To understand why it is necessary to do medication training To realise the importance of maintaining the service user’s privacy, dignity, independence and choice To be aware of the legislation surrounding medication To become familiar with the organisation’s medication policies and procedures To know the role you play in giving medication

Medication Training Learning Outcomes To be aware of your boundaries when assisting with medication To understand the importance of gaining the consent of the service user at all times To understand the types of medication available and the possible routes these might be given To ensure that you practice safe administration of medication at all times To understand what you can and can’t do in relation to medication

Infection Control Learners are updated on the importance of infection control in relation to the facilitation and administration of medication. Learners are given the opportunity to use the glow box to highlight the importance of good hand washing procedures.

Policies and Risk Assessments It is a requirement of the course that the learner bring an up to date copy of their workplace policy for administration of medication and a copy of a medication risk assessment.

Standard Operating Procedures The learner will have the opportunity to look at the standard operating procedure for medication in Blaenau Gwent, and are encouraged to compare this with their workplace operating procedure / guidance.

Competency There are two competency tests as part of the course, these are completed in strict test conditions to ensure the learners understanding In the event of a learner failing the test they would need to complete the course and competency test again prior to working with medication in their workplace.

Practical Application It is important for managers to be aware their staff will still need training in the practical application of medication administration and ensure appropriate supervision is provided before the learner is fully competent to administer medication.

Course Availability Places are available on:- 19 th and 23 rd November 2012 @ Tredegar Training Centre 9.30am – 4.30pm. These courses will be accessible via the event finder

Safe Administration of Medication [Caerphilly Specific] Safe Administration of Medication courses are available on the event finder. [These courses are specific to Caerphilly’s medication policy and have a competency test included.]
