Trends The historic trend in the reported number of natural disasters shows a consistent increase, with between 100 and 200 natural disasters reported each year during the 1980s, between 200 and 300 during the 1990s, and over 350 natural disasters reported each year from 2000 to the present. In addition, conflicts across the globe have led to dramatic increases in the total number of internally displaced peoples (IDPs), which rose from 17.4 million in 1997 to 27.5 million in 2011. The number of refugees is at a 15-year high, with 80% of refugees now located in developing countries that are ill-equipped to meet refugee needs. In the last year alone, crises affecting 13 million people in the Horn of Africa and 5.5 million in the Sahel confirm the strong upward trend for food assistance.
