Federal Aviation Administration Presented to: Pennsylvania State University 2010 Airports Conference By:Al Larkin, Project Manager for Non- Destructive Pavement Testing Date: March 3, 2010 FAA PAVEAIR Web-Based Pavement Management Software

2 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 2 Development Development was started in May 2008 The development and testing contractor is SRA International FAA PAVEAIR has been developed from the ground – up as a new application

3 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 3 Development Program Requirements –Web-based application that provides a system for easy dissemination of information for airport pavement construction, maintenance, and management. –Data for multiple airports available on a single server connected to the web –Suitable for installation and use on: Single PC Private network Intranet or Internet.

4 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 4 Development Program Requirements –The FAA to host a server installed at the WJHTC to be a repository for civil airport projects funded under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP). –Make the complete application available for free download: As a set of installation files. Full source code. Documentation for installation and operation.

5 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 5 Development DEN JFK DCA … Client Interface Server Airport Databases Architecture

6 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 6 Development System Databases Import Databases User Databases Database Architecture Database Architecture

7 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 7 Development ASPNETBD Database –Created by the Microsoft ASP.NET Logon Control –Authentication and authorization –Stores user information, session variables, session states, etc. –Provides Logon control, Creates User Wizard Password controls PDMSStatic Database –Stores top level configuration data. –PCI categories, colors, pavement roughness categories, etc.

8 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 8 Development Import Databases –Compatible with MicroPAVER. Able to import Micro Paver e60 file. Able to import Micro Paver MDB file. –Import Steps: Data is uploaded into PDMSPaverImport. Data is converted and temporarily stored in PaverToPDMS. Data is then copied to a new PAVEAIR database.

9 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 9 Development FAA PAVEAIR is under development using ASTM D 5340, “Standard Test Method for Airport Pavement Condition Index Surveys” Another valuable reference has been the currently out of print FAA Advisory Circular FAA-RD-80-55, “Procedure for Condition Survey of Civil Airports” The first release of FAA PAVEAIR will have the same functionality of MicroPAVER version 5.3

10 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 10 Development The development phase of FAA PAVEAIR (beta version) should be complete by March 2010 Development of two modules remain –Maintenance and Rehabilitation Analysis –PAVEAIR Mapping Function

11 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 11 Development Testing of an alpha version of FAA PAVEAIR is underway FAA PAVEAIR testing is anticipated to continue for approximately one year The release of FAA PAVEAIR for public use should take place by September 2010

12 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 12 Capabilities FAA PAVEAIR will be able to: – Collect: Divide airport pavements into uniform sections Record PCI data for each section – Store: Pavement condition history i.e. Pavement Condition Index (PCI) Pavement construction and maintenance history Store deflectometer test results for overlay design

13 Federal Aviation Administration FAA PAVEAIR March 3, 2010 13 Capabilities FAA PAVEAIR will be able to: – Analyze Generate network level reports for planning, budgeting, inspection scheduling, and pavement condition at any time, Provide project level analysis for M & R requirements and perform economic analyses for different M & R alternatives – Share Data
