Reflections of a Center CIO Dinna LeDuff Cottrell Chief Information Officer Stennis Space Center August 17, 2011

Stennis Space Center (SSC) 2 13,800 Acre Fee Area 125,000 Acre Buffer Zone - Nation’s largest rocket engine testing facility - Built in 1963 to support the Apollo space program

3 A unique Federal City hosting the NASA Shared Services Center and more than 30 federal, state, academic and private organizations, as well as numerous technology- based companies Test Complex SSC

4 IT Infrastructure Business Process Applications Contractor Performance Assessment AARIN Cost Data Warehouse RESTID Mission Focused Applications Data Acquisition Systems Cloud Computing DDMS/CM AcTrak Propulsion Test Video Systems Virtual Server Environment High Performance Storage Network Highly Reliable Database Environment Advanced Web Technologies Robust IT Security Program High-End Help Desk & System Admin Services Rocket TestApplied ScienceFederal City Providing IT to Mission, Center & Federal City Customers

OCIO Outreach Program Publicize IT capabilities and services of the SSC Office of the CIO to foster awareness and promote partnerships with Center organizations 5 IT Tech Expo - Held annually, 7 years in existence; attendance grows each year Attendees include NASA, NASA contractors, Center tenants and resident agencies Showcases SSC OCIO’s IT Services and Capabilities Each year a theme drives the focus, i.e. this year, “I3P and How it Affects Me” and “IT Goes Green” Executive session featuring keynote speakers Seminars highlight popular topics & emerging technologies Quarterly Brown Bag Seminars – Focus on technologies of interest and open to all SSC employees - Smart Phones and Geo-Tag Awareness - Protecting your home computer from Malware - Home Wireless Networks/Internet Safety- Social Collaboration Technologies/Cyber Security

NASA’s Rocket Propulsion Test Program Support 6 E-Complex Post Processing Software High speed and low speed post processing software has been re-developed and moved to the Stennis Data Center where all post processing now takes place Post processing speed has been greatly increased and more flexibility given to RPT engineers as access is via the NASA/SSC network Development of a NASA Data Acquisition System (NDAS) Software Accumulate raw data from sensors during engine tests and transfer data to the Stennis Data Center for storage and backup Allow engineers to display the raw data in real time, perform signal conditioning and calibration of the data stream Used across multiple test stands and multiple NASA engine test centers Replace proprietary contractor owned software with a NASA owned solution

Propulsion Test Video Systems Development of a Digital Video System to monitor and record rocket engine tests on the new A-3 Test Stand currently under construction Digital Video System upgrade in progress for existing A-1 and A-2 test stands Live video streaming system supports NASA and commercial customers –Aerojet AJ26 Engine Test for Orbital Sciences Corporation Design & Document Management System (DDMS) - Collaborative environment consisting of multiple tools allowing NASA, Contractor and Partner stakeholders to share design, configuration, analytical and operational information in the preparation and performance of engine testing Development and Sustaining operations Configuration Management Work Control Automation 7 NASA’s Rocket Propulsion Test Program Support (continued)

Applied Science Support 8 In partnership with the USGS and DHS, NASA SSC Applied Science Researchers utilized SSC’s Data Center and support services to rapidly mobilize resources to produce high- quality products used to monitor flooding along the Mississippi River and assess impacts of recent tornado damage Working with the SSC Applied Science Program to incorporate the NASA Nebula Cloud in its IT support services based on the successful utilization of Nebula to process thousands of datasets in support of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Flooding Along the Mississippi River Tornado Damage in Alabama & Mississippi Partnerships such as these rely heavily on a flexible and dynamic IT infrastructure

Contractor Performance Assessment System (CPAS) Provides a consistent method of capturing contractor performance input from technical monitors, Contracting Officers (COs) and Contracting Officer’s Technical Representatives (COTRs) Two-Factor Authentication (Active Directory and Smartcard) 9 Features: Role-based user access Allows contractor responses Email notifications Contract customization Routing Reports

Records Storage Tracking Inventory Database 10 Comprehensive Records Retention Facility inventory management system Barcode technology built on robust database infrastructure utilizing advanced web technologies and PIV2 badges for chain of custody Capable of managing any type of inventory / warehouse operation

Application for Air Range Information and Notification (AARIN) Standardize process to monitor flights within Stennis Space Center’s (SSC’s) buffer zone and fee area Provides for the Safety and Health of the Public and SSC employees All stakeholders are notified, including: Security Office Fire Department Engineering and Test Directorate 11

Video Services Spaced Out Sports –Career videos of world champion sports figures, NASA engineers and an astronaut demonstrating the importance of science and the laws of motion –Videos done at remote locations and produced for national exposure and maximum appeal –Resides on SSC’s public web site for Education* Bayou Regional FIRST Robotics Competition –Produced highlight video for SSC Office of Education –Produced NASA video which played at regional and national competition NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya demonstrates that the right amount of force and friction helps win the race! 12 Nastia Liukin and Super girl gymnasts demonstrate how you can reach for your stars by using the laws of motion to become an Olympic Gold Medalist! * http://education.ssc.nasa.gov/sos_videos.asp

13 Stennis Data Center Server Virtualization Application and mass data storage hosting services in support of –SSC Propulsion Test Programs –Center Operations Services –Center Administrative Offices Virtualization implementation initiated in 2005 is now complete –Maximum virtualization configuration of application servers has been implemented –Over 80% of total Data Center server instances have been virtualized Hosting over 140 applications on ten production hardware systems Virtual environment enables use of replication SW package to provide for remote disaster recovery capability Provides for automated server failover in the event of hardware failure Workstation Virtualization project for Propulsion Test Control Centers
