Miami University Background Medium-sized public university – About 16,000 Undergrads on main campus – ~45% live on campus Centralized support structure – One main support desk (24x7 by fall), and part-time satellite desk in main library – Varied support for students Software, connectivity, virus/spyware support for all students Hardware support + additional services for Miami Notebook owners No central computer requirement – Participation in Miami Notebook program is strongly recommended – Some colleges and departments do have platform recommendations/requirements (all can be met within the Miami Notebook program)

What do we support? Virus Removal* – Including support of the college’s AV software Spyware Removal* Network Connectivity Issues Basic miscellaneous software support Troubleshooting of other issues Windows XP or newer MacOS X Best effort for Linux and older Oss * Those who don’t own a Miami Notebook will be charged for this service

What don’t we support? Hardware repair, except for Miami Notebooks Note: Hardware repair for Miami Notebook owners only is a new rule, effective 03-01-2008; students who purchased a computer prior to this date are grandfathered in (for select vendors)

What We Require Anti-Virus software – Provide McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise to all students – Students are required to use our AV software Service Pack 2 for Windows XP All OS security updates Cisco Clean Access

Recommended Laptop Program - Miami Notebook Computers purchased from Miami (joint venture between IT Services and the University Bookstore) Vendors – HP (2 base models) and Apple (3 base categories) – HP (8510p & 6910p) – Apple (white & black MacBooks, MacBook Pro 2.4GHz, MacBook Pro 2.5GHz) Support for all problems, if Miami Notebook owner – Free while the computer is under warranty – Charge for out-of-warranty components (batteries, etc.)
