WORLD SETTLEMENT TYPES. DEFINITION OF SETTLEMENT. -A settlement may be defined as a Group of building with people living In them for purposes of engaging in Social, economic, political and cultural Activities. TYPES OF SETTLEMENT: There are two types of settlements: [i]Rural Settlement [ii ]Urban settlement. [a]Rural settlement: Characteristics : -It is a relatively small area with socially Homogenous people. - It could be nucleated,dispersed or linear. – It has a Population of less than 10,000 people. – People, here, engage in primary Activities e. g Agriculture,Lumbering, e. t. c -People share the same cultural background and language.. - Buildings found here are few, with Few social amenities... TYPES OF RURAL SETTLEMENT : - Home stead. –Hamlet. – villaqgs..

FUNCTIONS OF RURALSETTLEMENT: The two major criteria used in classifying Settlement into rural and urban settlement are: [i] Size [ii]Function. FUNCTION : - Agricultural function. – Lumbering Function. – Small scale shopping function. – Fishing function. –Religious function. URBAN SETTLEMENT [CHARACTERISTICS ]. -It has a population of over 10,000 people. - They engage mostly in secondary and tertiary Activities. – It is relatively large, densely populated with Socially heterogenious people. – It is of nucleated settlement -They have people with different languages. – There is abundance of Social amenities e. g electricity, pipe borne water. TYPES OF URBAN SETTLEMENT : - Town. – City. – Conurbation. – Metropolis. FUNCTIONS OF URBAN SETTLEMENT : - Industrial function. –Commercial function.- Administrative function. – Social cultural function. – Mining function. – Residential Function.

WAYS IN WHICH URBAN SETTLEMENT DIFFERFROM ONE ANOTHER. -SITE [PHISICAL LOCATION]: This is the actual Physical place a settlement occupies e. g on a Hill top, or foot hill,valley, coastal plain,river Bank e. t. c. -SITUATION [LOCATION IN RELATION TO OTHER AREAS ]: A good situation is the one that is Easily accessible to other settlement. – Size. – Function. - Plan and lay out [structure]. –Outlook [cleanliness,beauty, quality and services ] FAVOURABLE CONDITIONS FOR SITTING A SETTLEMENT. –Adequate water supply. - fertile soil. – land for building. – good communication network. – defence. FACTORS AFFECTING THE GROWTH OF SETTLEMENT : - accessibility, -economic activities. administration, - provision of social amenities. – nature of soils. -absence of disaster. – relief. –climate. -

BENEFITS/INTERDEPENDENCE BETWEEN RURAL AND URBAN SETTLEMENT Urban and rural settlement are interdependence i. e they depend on each Other for their continuous existence: DEPENDENCE OF URBAN SETTLEMENT ON RURAL SETTLEMENT : The rural areas perform the following functions for the urban centers: - Provision of food. - Unskilled labour supply. –Medicinal herbs. -Industrial raw materials.
