Adult Sabbath School Bible Study Guide An Appeal Dear User…. This PowerPoint Show is freely shared to all who may find it beneficial. While intended primarily for personal use, some find it useful for teaching the lesson in church. There are those, however, who add illustrations, change background, change fonts, etc. While their intention may be good, this is not right. Slide #2 says “designed by claro ruiz vicente.” For honest Christians, it is not necessary for another’s creation to be copyrighted in order to be respected. P LEASE U SE A S I S.

The Book of Luke Our Goal U nder the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Luke surveyed the historical materials, interviewed the eyewitnesses (1:2), and then, with “perfect understanding of all things,” wrote “an orderly account” that readers “may know the certainty” of Jesus and His good news (vss. 3, 4, NKJV).

Key Text Luke 19:10 NKJV “ ‘ T he Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.’ ”

The Mission of Jesus Initial Words “ I n the apostasy, man alienated himself from God; earth was cut off from heaven. Across the gulf that lay between, there could be no communion. But through Christ, earth is again linked with heaven. With His own merits, Christ has bridged the gulf which sin had made....” —Steps to Christ 20.

The Mission of Jesus Quick Look 1. Lost Sheep and Coin (Luke 15:2-10) 2. Lost Son (Luke 15:11-24) 3. Lost Opportunities (Luke 16:19-31)
10
The Mission of Jesus 1. Lost Sheep and Coin Luke 15:4, 8 NKJV “ ‘ W hat man...having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine...and go...until he finds it? Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she lost one, does not light a candle, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she finds it?’ ”
11
1. Lost Sheep and Coin Just One “ T he soul that has given himself to Christ is more precious in His sight than the whole world. The Saviour would have passed through the agony of Calvary that one might be saved in His kingdom. He will never abandon one for whom He has died. Unless His followers choose to leave Him, He will hold them fast.” —The Desire of Ages 483.
12
1. Lost Sheep and Coin Just One “The coin, though lying among dust and rubbish, is a piece of silver or gold still. Its owner seeks it because it is of value. So, every soul, however degraded by sin, is in God’s sight accounted precious.” —Christ’s Object Lessons 194.
13
The Mission of Jesus 2. Lost Son Luke 15:22-24 NKJV “ ‘ B ut the father said to his servants, “Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” ’ ”
14
2. Lost Son Forgiving Nature of Love “ G ive me” (12). The son wanted freedom, and in the quest for unhindered freedom was the seed of rebellion. “ Why me?” (13-16). His glittering life wound up in a gutter. Starved to the point of being in perpetual want, he found employment in caring for the pigs, a harsh fate for a Jew.
15
2. Lost Son Forgiving Nature of Love “ Make me” (17-19) whatever you want, but let me be within your watchful eyes, within the care of your love. What better home is there but the Father’s heart. “ The return home” (17-20) was a journey of repentance. The journey began “ ‘when he came to himself.’ ”
16
“The Return Home” True Meaning of Repentance Acknowledgment: to trust in our heavenly Father’s love and forgiveness. Confession: of sin against God and his father (18). Contrition: unworthiness, in contrast to the worthiness of God. Petition: surrender to whatever God wills is the destination of repentance.
17
2. Lost Son Forgiving Nature of Love “ Waiting father” (20, 21). No other image captures the character of God as that of the waiting father. “ Rejoicing family” (22-25). Over every repentant son there is joy in heaven. “ The elder brother” (25-32) was lost because, though he was home in the body, his heart was in a distant land and refuses to recognize a brother.
18
The Mission of Jesus 3. Lost Opportunities Luke 16:29-31 NKJV “ A braham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No,...but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
19
3. Lost Opportunities Two Truths on Salvation T oday is the day of salvation. The opportunity of being saved and living saved must not be missed while we are on this earth. We have no second chance. Eternal reward has nothing to do with material possessions. The essential of life: God. Where God is not recognized, fellow human beings are not noticed.
20
3. Lost Opportunities Two Truths on Salvation There is no second chance after death. “It is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Heb. 9:27). We have been given enough evidence now, in this life, to make a conscious choice for or against God. Any theology that teaches some kind of “second chance” after death is a great deception.
21
3. Lost Opportunities Two Broken Men Restored Bartimaeus (18:35-43). He was a beggar; physically challenged, socially of no consequence, and poverty stricken. His faith surged upward to cry out, “ ‘Son of David, have mercy on me!’ ” (39). Faith requires neither eyes nor ears, feet nor hands, but only a heart that connects to the Creator of the world.
22
3. Lost Opportunities Two Broken Men Restored Zacchaeus (19:1-10). A chief sinner sought and saved by the Savior; a curious man seeking to see who Jesus was, and a loving Lord commanding the man to come down, for He had a self-invited lunch date with him. But more important, Jesus had a delivery to make: “ ‘Today salvation has come to this house’ ” (9).
23
The Mission of Jesus Final Words “ T he value of a soul, who can estimate?... Go to Gethsemane, and there watch with Christ through those hours of anguish, when He sweat as it were great drops of blood. Look upon the Saviour uplifted on the cross... remembering that for one sinner Christ would have laid down His life....” —Christ’s Object Lessons 196.
