2 B ACKGROUND Where is the Mississippi River? One of the world’s major river systems in size, habitat diversity and biological productivity. It is the third longest river in North America. Flows 2,350 miles from its source. Starts: Lake Itasca in the Headwaters area of north central Minnesota End: Gulf of Mexico

5 B ACKGROUND How did people live in the 1850s in America? Employment: Not only consisted of men and women, but children as well. Consisted of anything from hard manual labor to a bank clerk. Factory work was also common Did not discriminate against gender or age. Children were perfect for factory work because they were tiny and were able to crawl in and out of tight places. Fashion: said a lot about a person's life. A simple, fitting, and neat outfit usually meant that the people were wealthy and could afford to see a tailor. The sewing machine allowed people to make more elaborate clothing at a faster rate. Women's clothing and children's clothing was more detailed Men's clothing was well-designed and simple. Women loved the stylish and extravagance of the dress and the look it gave them. Women were equally extravagant and frilly in regards to dressing their children.

8 B ACKGROUND Travel: Was a difficult process. Streets were not paved, and were often extremely muddy. Trains and trolleys were a common form of travel from city to city or from one area of town to another. Hotels were common in cities Death: Was common Death during childbirth and infant mortality were still high because medicine was not developed.

10 C HAPTER 1 R EVIEW : Who is: Tom Sawyer: young boy, protagonist, clever, smart, lazy, brave, his parents died Aunt Polly: Tom’s aunt, angry at Tom, Tom lives with her Jim: Tom’s friend Ben: Tom’s friend, tricked into painting the fence Joe Harper: Tom’s friend; Tom goes to his house to play at the end of the chapter Why was Aunt Polly angry? Tom doesn’t like work or school; Tom skipped school. How did Tom trick his friends and his Aunt Polly? Tells his friends he likes to paint, give him food and then they can paint, Tom makes painting seem like a fun activity, his aunt believed he painted it when she looks outside Who did Tom see on his walk home from Joe’s house? A beautiful girl; waits to talk to her but she doesn’t come back out.

11 T RUE OR F ALSE : Tom is a very good student. Tom’s friends want to paint Aunt Polly’s fence. Aunt Polly is happy with her white fence. Tom is late for school because he went to the graveyard. Tom wants to walk to school with Amy. Tom goes to school every and every afternoon. Tom and Huck are afraid of Injun Joe. People in the town say, “Muff Potter killed the doctor.” Tom is feeling uneasy after the third day of the trial.
