A verb is a word that expresses action or state of being. There are 3 classifications of verbs: 1. Helping Verbs (be, am, is, are, was, were, been, has, have, had, do, does, did, may, can, must, might, would, could, should, shall, will, being) 2. Action Verbs (bark, throw, run, etc.) 3. Transitive & Intransitive Verbs A verb phrase uses action and helping verbs to complete a sentence.

Add a verb phrase to each subject phrase you’ve been given below. You are required to make one a question. Underline each helping verb and the action verb. Example: your neighbor’s dog “Your neighbor’s dog can do tricks.” 1. the bird watchers’ club 2. the new computer chip 3. her school picture

Identify and write down the verb phrase in each of the following sentences. Example: Fairy tales are sometimes called folk tales. (Answer: are called) 1. Long ago, many people could not read. 2. Instead, they would memorize stories. 3. Then they would tell the stories to their family members and friends. 4. The people, or folk, have passed the tales on from generation to generation. 5. Finally, some people have written the collected stories.

Identify and write down the verb phrase in each of the following sentences. Example: Fairy tales are sometimes called folk tales. (Answer: are called) 1. Two German brothers, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, have published a famous collection of German folk tales. 2. The brothers had heard many of the tales form their older relatives. 3. Their collection of stories had become extremely popular all over the world. 4. “Sleeping Beauty,” “Cinderella,” and “Rumpelstiltskin” were all preserved by the Grimm brothers. 5. In your library, you can probably find these tales and may others, too.
