NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications unifies protection for Microsoft applications. A single module protects Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server 2012, SharePoint, Active Directory, and Data Protection Manager (DPM)—leveraging the VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) framework and doing so with a single recovery interface for all supported applications and platforms.
Common features help make it easier to manage backup and recovery. There’s no need to learn a new interface for each individual application type. NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications ties NetWorker’s snapshot management capabilities into Microsoft VSS to enable more-effective backup and recovery, and provides a facility for making point-in-time volume snapshots and clones on the Windows platform. Using the VSS framework, NetWorker integrates with EMC hardware platforms as well as third-party hardware providers to create point-in-time shadow copies on the array for the purposes of backup to secondary media or fast recovery and return to service.
SQL Server support is also a combination off VSS and traditional VDI support. This mixture provides the ability for point in time granularity along with full, incremental (transactional log), differential and copy backup support.
Now you can use industry-leading deduplication—Data Domain (including DD Boost support) and Avamar—to help protect your Microsoft data as well, all managed seamlessly by NetWorker. DD Boost support includes Hyper-V, SQL Server, Exchange and SharePoint. Based on policy, you can choose which solution to use to reduce the impact of data growth.
New wizards for NetWorker 8.0 and higher, make it simple to configure Microsoft application backups. Launched from the NetWorker Management Console, this makes setup simple to protect your entire environment.
The NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications 2.3 and higher also supports configuration of the application server as a dedicated storage node, enabling LAN-free backup and recovery from the application host. New Granular Lever Recovery (GLR) support provides customers instant access for fast restores of Exchange, SharePoint and Hyper-V. This new granular level recovery leaves the saveset in place on disk and mounts the underlying file system to the server. Then using either the NMM recovery interface or Kroll Ontrack PowerControls (for Sharepoint), the backup or admininstrator can simply point to the desired file and perform a recovery. The new process is faster and saves customers valuable time when recovering because recovering the entire saveset is no longer necessary. It’s also more efficient because it no longer needs temporary disk space for restores.
With this solution, NetWorker lowers the operational effort for backup and recovery of the Microsoft applications listed here. This simplified administration reduces staffing costs.
