1 ACCELERATES BACKUP TRANSFORMATION
EMC ACCELERATES BACKUP TRANSFORMATION Few organizations are still deciding whether to start their journey, most of them are looking to accelerate their journey. BELOW ARE NOTES ONLY, NOT FOR MONITOR: EMC is excited to listen and learn from our customers and partners to maximize the opportunities of cloud computing and big data. We want to be with our customers every step of the way to accelerate the journey to their cloud and to realize the benefits of offering IT as a service.

2 Journey To Next-Generation Backup, Recovery and Archiving
Traditional Tape- and Truck-centric Transitional Disk and Tape Next-Generation Disk- and Network-centric The transition to next-generation backup has often been called a journey. It is an appropriate term because for many customers, their backup environment has evolved literally over the course of decades. So it’s easy to see how it may take several steps or phases to transform something that has been in existence for so long. Also consider that customers are at different places along the way, and even some are in more than one place, each with their own unique set of challenges and requirements. Application Protection is Key to Accelerating the Journey

3 EMC Continues To Evolve Backup
Software And Storage Designed To Work Together Unlocks The Power Of Disk Improves Performance: Up To 50% Faster Than Traditional Solutions Simplicity: One User Interface— Common Policy Management Predictability: Proven Best Practices—Over 20,000 Installations INTEGRATED ARCHITECTURE Storage Software EMC continues to innovate. EMC leads the market in integration of both software and storage systems, designed to work together. Through an integrated data deduplication architecture, EMC is able to break the mold of more conventional approaches being used to deploy deduplication. EMC Data Domain provides performance increases by distributing the deduplication process across the backup path -- up to 50% faster in most cases. Integrated solutions are easier to use because they allow a more unified view of the entire solution to simplify configuration, day-to-day administration and reporting. Solution behavior is more predictable making it easier to size and scale out the solution as needs grow. And finally it’s easier to support. This all adds up to provide an easier approach to redesign and forming a next gen backup foundation moving forward. Deduplication Remains a Critical Component

5 Data Domain And Avamar Protect MS Apps
Protect key configuration files and databases Data Deduplication requires only a fraction of the disk capacity used for traditional backup methods Integrates easily into existing Microsoft SQL Server and all MS apps for fast, online backup Optimized for large high-change databases Keep more full backups online for rapid restore All managed with a single interface Network efficient replication for DR Leverages  Intel® Xeon® Processor Technology NAS ROBO Customers complain about the complexity of their backup solutions. The impression is that too much time, expertise and effort is spent keeping the current recovery system(s) afloat. Customers want the backup process to be less costly and need less supervision and administrative attention. Given the pressure on backup, it is not surprising that more businesses are in a transition, First from tape to disk and then to disk-enabled deduplication backup solutions. Deduplication is accelerating this backup transition. It’s changed the economics of disk. It improves backup performance, consumes less storage, and allows you to retain backups on disk longer as well as for archiving. And because it is disk-based, it’s also more reliable. The diagram illustrates common backup workloads on the left. Currently, all of these can be delivered to an Avamar Data Store. Avamar provides fast, online backup for Microsoft SQL Server databases with data deduplication, it allows the DBA/IT Pro to retain a greater number of full backup images online with many options for recovery. [Click] The Integration with Data Domain allows the highlighted workloads to be sent to the Data Domain system to take advantage of its scale and performance. Data Domain systems reduce the amount of disk storage needed to retain and protect data by ratios of 10 to 30-times and greater, making disk a cost-effective alternative to tape. These systems can protect up to 28 PB of logical capacity in a single system, enabling you to retain data online and onsite for longer periods, as well as providing faster and more reliable restores. With throughput up to 26 TB/hr, Data Domain systems allow more backups to complete sooner while putting less pressure on limited backup windows. All that can be achieved through a single interface with database and application specific modules like SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint and many more…. EMC backup systems also include a built-in data replication capability to maintain the availability of the backup system with either Avamar or DataDomain Avamar Client Avamar Data Store DD Boost Data Domain System DD Boost

These systems can protect up to 28.5 PB of logical capacity in a single system enabling customers to retain data online and onsite for longer retention periods, as well as providing faster and more reliable restores. With throughput up to 26.3 TB/hour, Data Domain systems allow more backups to complete sooner while putting less pressure on limited backup windows. EMC Data Domain Replicator software transfers only the deduplicated and compressed unique changes across any IP network, requiring a fraction of the bandwidth, time, and cost, compared to traditional replication methods. “Time-to-DR readiness” is greatly reduced when compared to other replication methods. Data Domain systems are qualified with all leading enterprise backup software and archiving applications and easily integrate into the existing storage infrastructure without change for either data center or distributed office data protection. Data Domain systems can be directly integrated into Microsoft SQL Server environments as disk backup media. In addition, Data Domain systems support all leading enterprise backup and archive applications for seamless integration into existing IT infrastructures. The use of different backup methodologies with Microsoft SQL Server and Data Domain systems typically has a negligible effect on overall data deduplication ratios. This enables performing native database backups in conjunction with database backups controlled by backup applications like Networker without affecting deduplication efficiency. Data Domain replication can be used to create offsite copies of SQL backups faster and more economically than legacy tape-based strategies. * Data Domain replication makes advanced disaster recovery preparedness for MS SQL Server a reality * It integrates easily and seamlessly into existing Microsoft SQL Server environments * Data Domain allows the database administrative team to retain a greater number of full backup images online, thereby optimizing recovery options while occupying minimal footprint in the data center * It greatly reduces dependence on tape Supports SQL Server dump command; advanced integration with leading backup software via Data Domain Boost Powered by Intel® Xeon® Processor Technology

9 NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications Centralized Protection for All Microsoft Applications
Single Module For All Applications EMC deduplication integration Data Domain Avamar Microsoft VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service)-Based Integrated Deduplication Dedicated Storage Node Support Removes Impact From Hosts NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications unifies protection for Microsoft applications. A single module protects Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server 2012, SharePoint, Active Directory, and Data Protection Manager (DPM)—leveraging the VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) framework and doing so with a single recovery interface for all supported applications and platforms. Common features help make it easier to manage backup and recovery. There’s no need to learn a new interface for each individual application type. NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications ties NetWorker’s snapshot management capabilities into Microsoft VSS to enable more-effective backup and recovery, and provides a facility for making point-in-time volume snapshots and clones on the Windows platform. Using the VSS framework, NetWorker integrates with EMC hardware platforms as well as third-party hardware providers to create point-in-time shadow copies on the array for the purposes of backup to secondary media or fast recovery and return to service. SQL Server support is also a combination off VSS and traditional VDI support. This mixture provides the ability for point in time granularity along with full, incremental (transactional log), differential and copy backup support. Now you can use industry-leading deduplication—Data Domain (including DD Boost support) and Avamar—to help protect your Microsoft data as well, all managed seamlessly by NetWorker. DD Boost support includes Hyper-V, SQL Server, Exchange and SharePoint. Based on policy, you can choose which solution to use to reduce the impact of data growth. New wizards for NetWorker 8.0 and higher, make it simple to configure Microsoft application backups. Launched from the NetWorker Management Console, this makes setup simple to protect your entire environment. The NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications 2.3 and higher also supports configuration of the application server as a dedicated storage node, enabling LAN-free backup and recovery from the application host. This takes the backup traffic off the network and leverages the performance and efficiency of the SAN infrastructure instead. New Granular Lever Recovery (GLR) support provides customers instant access for fast restores of Exchange, SharePoint and Hyper-V. This new granular level recovery leaves the saveset in place on disk and mounts the underlying file system to the server. Then using either the NMM recovery interface or Kroll Ontrack PowerControls (for Sharepoint), the backup or admininstrator can simply point to the desired file and perform a recovery. The new process is faster and saves customers valuable time when recovering because recovering the entire saveset is no longer necessary. It’s also more efficient because it no longer needs temporary disk space for restores. With this solution, NetWorker lowers the operational effort for backup and recovery of the Microsoft applications listed here. This simplified administration reduces staffing costs. By enabling off-host backup, the impact of data protection operations is off- loaded, which translates directly into more efficiency for your server, SQL Server database, SharePoint servers, and more. 10 EMC SourceOne for Microsoft Applications
Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint and Office 365 Archiving for Information Governance SourceOne Operational Efficiencies MS Exchange 2010/MS SharePoint 2010 migrations PST reductions and mailbox quota elimination Hardware storage cost reductions System performance enhancements Corporate Compliance Corporate policies and lifecycle management Regulated industries including; FRCP rules (Financial), HIPAA rules (HealthCare), OSHA rules (Manufacturing), International rules (EMEA & APJ) eDiscovery Rapid responsiveness to legal action or HR inquiries Search and responsiveness without spoliation Access to information for business reuse Better management and control of information is important to ALL our customers for many reasons. Let’s look at the three top drivers – and keep in mind that in some accounts, ALL these drivers may be present. The 1st reason has horizontal application. Operations remains a significant area of importance for better data management. sprawl costs our customers a lot of time and money because it continues to grow. Since most organizations cannot tell what is valuable and what’s stale, they are forced to store, secure and back it all up, at significant expense. Getting their arms around that data so they can eliminate duplicates, and enforcing policies to insure that content is saved only in permitted locations, are important goals. Secondly, compliance is a continuing – and growing -- concern for many companies. Newer regulations force companies to secure certain types of data and also to keep it up- to-date. It’s important for companies to know where that data resides so that they can protect it, and to eliminate stale data so that it doesn’t get them in trouble. Finally, eDiscovery remains a big concern because of its expense and capability to disrupt IT departments. Capabilities for more efficient searching of and other big data stores can substantially reduce risk and cut cost. Increase operational efficiency and gain control of Microsoft Applications with EMC SourceOne
