UK sees shortage of engineering graduates The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has said that within the next four years there will be a significant number of new jobs created to keep up with technological advances. In order to fill these vacancies, candidates will require candidates to be skilled in science, maths, engineering and technology subjects, said Sarah Morris, spokesperson for the CBI.

25 e-Skills UK IT & Telecoms workforce needs 110,000 new recruits this year (2011) The UK’s IT & Telecoms industry contributes £81 billion, i.e. 9% of the total UK economy. IT & Telecoms is at the heart of every UK sector, underpinning the GVA contributions of all businesses. One in every 20 people (1.5 million) working in the UK is employed in IT & Telecoms. Employment in the IT & Telecoms industry over the next decade is forecast to grow at 2.19% per annum, nearly five times faster than the UK average, with over half a million new IT & Telecoms professionals needed over the next five years. *Gross Value Added

London Met graduate Sells TweetPhoto Business for an estimated US$10-15 million In 2010, London Met graduate Sean Callahan used revolutionary social-networking tool Twitter to successfully launch his new business Plixi. He developed a photo sharing technology which allowed images to be shared between Twitter, Facebook and other social media from their mobile devices. He turned his original concept into a successful business. In 2011 he sold his business for an estimated US$10-15 million to social commerce network Lockerz. Plixi, originally called TweetPhoto, is one of the top 250 websites in the world, attracting 27.5 million users a month, including a host of celebrities. Sean, who lives in San Diego, California, joined London Met at the start of 2009. ‘I decided on London Met because I liked the small class sizes and the teachers seemed very knowledgeable.’ Lockerz
