9 Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Makes a claim about the problem. Does not make a claim OR makes an inaccurate claim. Makes a claim that reveals partial understanding. The claim may include both accurate and inaccurate details, or it may omit important details. Makes an accurate claim. Provides evidence for the claim. Does not provide evidence OR provides inaccurate evidence for the claim. Provides some accurate evidence for the claim, but it is not sufficient evidence OR may include both accurate and inaccurate evidence for the claim. Provides accurate evidence and sufficient evidence for the claim. Provides reasoning about scientific principles or “what we know in science” that links the evidence to the claim. Does not provide reasoning OR provides inaccurate reasoning. Provides partial reasoning that links the evidence to the claim, but the reasoning is not sufficient OR may include both appropriate reasoning and reasoning that does not link the evidence to the claim. Provides explicit reasoning that links the evidence to the claim. The scientific principle or “what we know in science” is described and used appropriately.

10 Scientific Explanation (Ohio State Bad Example)
Ohio State is the best Big Ten football team. They are the best because I like to watch them. They are also the best because my dad says they are the best. They are my favorite team. They are winning.

11 Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Makes a claim about the problem.

12 Scientific Explanation (Ohio State Good Example)
Ohio State is the best Big Ten football team. They are the best because they have won five games and lost zero in the conference play, or the Big Ten. They are the only team in the Big Ten that has won all of their conference games. Ohio State is also 4-0 in their division, the east. In the College Football Playoff Rankings, AP Top 25, USA Today Poll, and the ESPN Power Rankings Ohio State is ranked higher than any other Big Ten team. In order to be the best football team in the Big Ten teams have to win all of their games in the conference. Because Ohio State has won all of their in the conference they are the best. Also, the best teams are ranked highest in all the above mentioned polls. Because Ohio State is ranked higher than all the other Big Ten teams in the polls they are the best team in the Big Ten.

13 Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 Makes a claim about the problem.

15 Mr. Xavier Mystery Do NOT write on the paper with the story
Use the story to create a claim Use the story to gain evidence Provide reasons why your evidence backs up your claim Write on the developing scientific explanations chart Then write your scientific explanation

16 C E R Claim:A statement that answers the question being investigated
Evidence: Quantitative data or qualitative observations that support the claim Reasoning: Shows how the evidence supports the claim by using Uses science principles to explain the relevance and importance of the data
