PILGRIMS Known as Separatists in England - wanted out (to separate) from the Church of England Were fined, jailed and at times killed b/c of religion Pilgrims: didn’t want gold but religious freedom September Mayflower sailed, got off course by Nov. landed in Massachusetts not Virginia

Pilgrims were blown off course and landed outside of Jamestown authority. Outside of the legal authority of the Virginia Co, Who makes the rules for the new colony?

Wrote document before they got off boat. Rules for colony saying they word work together. 1st time colonists claimed right to govern themselves!!!

That First Year…. Winter of 1620-1621
Only 44 out of the original 102 survived. None chose to leave in 1621 when the Mayflower sailed back. Fall of 1621 First “Thanksgiving.” Colony survived with fur, fish, and lumber. Plymouth stayed small and economically unimportant. 1691 only 7,000 people Merged with Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Low mortality average life expectancy was 70 years of age. Average 6 children per family. Average age at marriage: Women – 22 years old Men – 27 years old.

Carolina Grows Good land around Jamestown, VA becomes scarce. Newcomers begin to settle west and south around the Albormoral sound. King Creates a new colony and rewards 8 Lords by putting them in charge of the colony. (Lord proprietors) Residents of Carolina owned the land but had to pay a tax a quit-rent, annual tax to Lords Settlers in NC less wealthy than Virginia Settlers around Albarmoral sound were one district and Settlers around Pamlico sound were in another district. Carolina Grows Much conflict between groups in North Carolina, created Culpeppers rebellion against the Lord Proprietors and governing North Carolina was difficult. Tuscora rebelled against settlers and were defeated. People began to move west Most people lived east of the fall line. But many came, and settled in the piedmont. Germans, Scotch Irish, Quakers, Moravians Farming was very difficult for them and they were mostly poor compared to the colonists in the eastern part of the state.
