2 What is the SpectraSonde? Reads temperature, pressure, and humidity data from the atmosphere. The SpectraSonde doesn’t fly like some of its other AnaSonde relatives, but is rather an on-the-ground test making it a perfect educational tool. This data can be plotted and used to determine the weather, what type of pressure system is located where the test site is, etc. ✔ ✔ ✔

5 SpectraSonde Kit Breakdown Circuit board U1: 78LO5 voltage regulator U2: microcontroller D1: light emitting diode (LED) R1: 620 ohm resistor (Blue, Red, Brown, Gold) R2: 300 ohm resistor (Orange, Black, Brown, Gold) C1, C2: 0.1 μF capacitor S1, S2: switch SP1: buzzer B1: 9-volt battery snap 8-pin socket for U2 T: LM19 temperature sensor P: ASDX015A24R pressure sensor (this is loose inside the box) RH: HIH-4000 humidity sensor              

6 A Quick Lesson on How to Solder Soldering is the joining of metals by a fusion of alloys which have relatively low melting points. Be VERY careful! Soldering iron is HOT! Tie up your hair! You do not want it hanging in the way of the hot iron! Wear safety goggles at ALL times! Eye protection is VERY important!

7 1.Apply a very small amount of solder to the soldering iron’s tip. This is called tinning. It makes it easier to solder. (Note: This is not the solder that will make the connection.) 2.Place the part into its correct spot on the circuit board. Bend the leads if you need to in order to hold it in place. Once the component is secured on the board, heat up the component and the board with the soldering iron.

8 1.Once heated, touch the solder to the lead and the board, not to the iron tip. 2.Once solder is applied, stop applying solder and then remove the tip. Allow to cool. 3.After the part has cooled, clip the leads (the ends) of the part so that they don’t stick out far.

9 Soldering Tips Keep your iron on the holder when not in use. It WILL burn something if placed somewhere else. If you create a solder bridge by accident, you can use copper braid to pull out some of the solder by placing it over the bridge and holding the soldering iron to it for 10- 20 seconds at a time. ✔ ✔

10 Soldering Tips You do NOT need to push all of the parts all the way down to the board. In fact, it is better if parts such as D1, U1, the speaker, temperature sensor, and humidity sensor remain a little above the board. (See pictures as you go along.) Other components such as U2, R1 and R2, S1 and S2, and others should be placed as close as they can be to the board. (Again, see the pictures for verification.) ✔

11 Do Not Let Solder Bridges Occur! Make sure you put on enough solder to make the connection but not so much the circuit is shorted. Too much solder = Bridges Too little solder = Holes

12 Perfect Amount of Solder No gaps between the board and the part because there is too little, and no bridges because there is too much. Perfect Amount

13 Let’s Start Assembling Our SpectraSonde! 1.Plug in soldering iron and place on stand. 2.Wet the sponge. 3.Look at circuit board and identify:  Component Side (with white labels)  Solder Side (with no labels) 4.Throughout assembly process, it may be helpful to bend leads, clip, or tape parts to hold them in place.

14 Installing socket for U2 U2 is direction sensitive! Line up notch of U2 with the notch drawn on the circuit board! ✔

15 Tips for Socket Installation Using alligator clips to hold the socket in place may make soldering this easier. ✔

16 Install R1 and R2 Bend the leads of R1 and R2 so that they fit into their holes on the board nicely and easily. Once the resistor has been put through the holes, bend the leads in back a little so that it stays in place while you solder. ✔ ✔

17 After R1 and R2 Installation

18 Install U1 U1 is direction sensitive! Be certain that the flat edge matches up with the flat edge drawn in white on the circuit board. Also: U1 looks just like the temperature sensor- Make sure this is 78LO5 (read the label). Do not mix them up! ✔ ✔

21 Install D1 This diagram of D1 is showing us that the lead on the same side as the lip on the diode is the number 3 lead, which is “anode green”. The lead on the other side, number 1, is “anode red”. Look at the LED and make sure that you put the correct lead into the correct spot on the board. This is VERY important! The holes are labeled on the board, green and red. ✔

22 Install D1 continued Like with the socket, you can use alligator clips to hold D1 and the board in place to make soldering easier. ✔

24 Installing the Sensors

25 Temperature + T g When you are installing the temperature sensor, be sure that the individual leads go into the correct holes on the board. Match the labels in this picture with the white labels on the board. DON’T push the sensor all of the way down to the board! ✔ ✔ ✔

26 Humidity g RH + Like the temperature sensor, when you are installing the humidity sensor, be sure that the individual leads go into the correct holes on the board. Match the labels in this picture with the white labels on the board. DON’T push the sensor all of the way down to the board! DON'T touch the sensor chip! ✔ ✔ ✔

27 Pressure The pressure sensor has a notch cut out of pin 1. This pin goes into the hole with the oval pad on the board. Once this is matched up, there is only one way that the sensor will fit into the holes on the board.   ✔ ✔

29 Install SP1

30 Install the Battery Snap The battery snap must have the red lead going to the positive and the black going to the negative. Thread the wire up through the bigger holes to the side of the + and – holes, and then bring them back down through the + and – holes accordingly.

31 Install the Battery Snap

32 Install U2, the Microcontroller

33 Your SpectraSonde is Ready to Go! To test, connect a 9-volt battery to the battery snap and turn on. If the LED starts to blink, it works! ✔
