Where should you begin? Step 1 Fold a sheet of looseleaf in half. At the top of the first column write the title: Topics to Research. At the top of the second column, write the title: Topics Ranked. Step 2 Look at the problem question on the Proposal Form. (What effect does question). Circle all the key words that you might research. Write these words in Column 1 of the looseleaf. Step 3 Look at the topics listed on the Science Fair Proposal Form. Under column 1 add any words from the Science Fair Proposal Form that are not already on your list. 2

What’s Next? Step 4 Rewrite the list in the order of importance with 1 being the most important, 2 being next, etc. This is the order in which you research. Problem Question: What effect does microwaving have on radish plants? Topics To Research radish plant stems roots leaves Microwave oven electromagnetic spectrum light radiation soil heat Topics Ranked 1.Microwave oven 2.radiation 3.radish plant 4.electromagnetic spectrum 5.heat 6.stems 7.roots 8.leaves 9.light 10.soil 3

Download the Note Form at www.allsaintsscience.org. Begin to type out the Note Form for the first topic. Name: Mary Jones Science Fair Research Notes Class: Science 8A Date: Oct. 25, 2014 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Topic: microwave oven Subtopic: 5. 5 6. Locate the Works Cited Location on the Computer For Set 1 notes, use the World Book Encyclopedia through your school library account: 1.Go to the school’s webpage: http://allsaintsvaschool.orghttp://allsaintsvaschool.org 2.Go to Academics on the Navigation Bar. 3.Click and go to Library on the dropdown menu. 4.Go to World Book Online Encyclopedia found on the left side of the page. 5.Put in your Log In ID and password. 6.Click on “Student.” 7.Type in the topic your are researching in the Search box at the top left of the page. 8.Look over the entries and find those that you think will be most helpful. 5

7. Select the article you wish to start with and begin to take notes. Write the topic and subtopic on the note form. Read through the article first. Identify the most important parts of the article. Bullet notes in your own words, paraphrase. Use quotation marks if you must copy a very important part. (Keep these to a minimum) Pay special attention to definitions, descriptions, inventor names, how this information can be applied. Microwave oven 6

Try this for practice. “Microwave oven is an appliance that uses short, high-frequency waves of electromagnetic energy to heat and cook food. These waves, called microwaves, are absorbed primarily by the water molecules in food. The waves cause the molecules to vibrate rapidly. This vibration results in friction between the molecules, which in turn produces the heat that cooks the food.” Topic: microwave oven Subtopic: definition World Book Encyclopedia says: Facts: Appliance – “uses short, high frequency waves of electromagnetic energy.” For heating/cooking Food is cooked when water in food takes in microwaves Molecules in objects placed in microwave vibrate quickly Molecular rubbing, friction, causes heat to cook food. 7

8. Cut and paste the Works Cited reference from World Book to your notes from the end of the article. Source: Citation: Gallawa, John C. "Microwave oven." World Book Student. World Book, 2014. Web. 19 Oct. 2014. Don’t forget to leave a hanging indent for all Works Cited entries. That means leave the first line stick out and the rest of the entry be indented under it. Here’s a few more to look at: Hayward, Jason P. "Radiation." World Book Student World Book, 2014. Web. 20 Oct. 2014. Keating, Richard C. "Root." World Book Student. World Book, 2014. Web. 20 Oct. 2014. Liptay, Albert. "Radish." World Book Student. World Book, 2014. Web. 20 Oct. 2014. 8

9. Complete the last 2 sections of the form. Identify Key Words you used in your notes. These can then be used for future notes. Key Words: frequencymolecules Electromagneticfriction Energyvibration New Questions to Research: Why do microwaves cause vibrations? What is the difference between high frequency and low frequency waves? 9

10. Continue to research your remaining points. Grade 6 – Use 2 or more sources from World Book. Grade 7 – Use 3 or more sources from World Book. Grade 8 – Use 4 or more sources from World Book 10 Use one more resource from any of the following or something similar: https://www.thesciencedictionary.com/ http://science.yourdictionary.com/ http://msms.ehe.osu.edu/tag/scientific-terms/ http://dictionary.reference.com/science/
