1 THE POSSESSIVE FORM WITH NOUNS In English we use an apostrophe (‘) and “S” after the names of persons or substantives that represent persons to indicate that an object is in the possession of a person.

2 Singular Nouns To show the possessive of a noun in singular add apostrophe and “S” (‘s = His / Her) Examples … * Joe’s sports car. One person, singular. * The doctor’s office. One person, singular.

3 Exception: To show the possessive of a two or more syllable proper noun which ends in “S” add apostrophe only.(‘ = His / Her) Example… Carlos’ hat. Example… Carlos’ hat. Example… Mrs. Perkins’ garden Example… Mrs. Perkins’ garden

4 Plural Nouns A. Regular Plural Nouns. To show possessive of plural nouns which end in “S” add apostrophe ONLY. Example. The boys’ little house. Example. The boys’ little house. Example. The students’ books. Example. The students’ books.

5 B. Irregular Plural Nouns. To show the possessive of irregular plural nouns add apostrophe and “S” Examples… The policemen’s guns. Examples… The policemen’s guns. (‘s = Their) Examples… The women’s purses. Examples… The women’s purses.
