Local Attraction to Expand Globally Planning for the Future of Travel and Tourism

In the last activity you examined the features that make tourist attractions popular. We also have looked at how tourism promotes the economy of many places. In Toronto, what are some tourist attractions and what are the attributes (features) that can make them very popular destinations. Example of two global attractions and the attributes that made them so popular.

Sydney Opera House The Sydney Opera House in Sydney Harbour, Australia is a global landmark.

Sydney Opera House: Attributes Architectural Significance – the designer of the Opera House wanted the building to blend into the harbour of Sydney. Jorn Utzon, a Danish Architect, did this by designing the building to look like the sails of a historical Tall Ship from the 1700’s. Historical Significance – the Opera House was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on October 20, 1973. Evening Recreation – this building includes five theatres, five rehearsal studios, two main halls, four restaurants, six bars and numerous souvenir shops.

Venice, Italy The city formed almost 2000 years ago and grew to become a major sea port in Europe during the time period from 1000s to 1800s

Venice, Italy: Attributes Architectural Significance – major historical buildings and landmarks such as Palace of the Doges (Dukes), Bridge of Sighs, Rialto Bridge, the Tower of St. Mark, St. Mark Basilica (Church). Historical Prominence – this port became the starting point for many of the Crusades in the 1200s, also a major trade seaport. Distinctive Local Features – there are no roads in Venice! There are footpaths but all travel within Venice is by boat through canals that weave through all the small islands. Other features include museums, churches, and the Piazza (plaza or square) of St. Mark.
