What is an article? An, the and a are some examples of articles in English. They let someone else know what exactly you are talking about. For example: I sat in the chair. I sat in a chair.

Now in Spanish…. There are also articles in Spanish that let who you’re talking to know what you are talking about. el, la, un, una are the ones we are focusing on today.

Definite versus Indefinite Definite articles will tell someone exactly what you are talking about. Ex. The chair. (Speaking specifically, is about a certain chair) Indefinite articles will tell someone the idea of what you are talking about. Ex. A chair. (Speaking generally, could be about any chair)

El El is a definite article that refers to a masculine word in Spanish. El is the equivalent of the for a masculine noun. Example: The boy runs. El niño corre.

La No, we’re not talking about L.A. La is a definite article that refers to a feminine word in Spanish. La is the equivalent of the for a feminine noun. Example: The girl runs. La niña corre.

Un Un is the indefinite article that refers to masculine nouns. Un is the equivalent of a/an in Spanish. Example: A boy runs. Un niño corre.
