O THER P SYCHOANALYSTS Carl Jung (Freud’s frenemy) – Two separate unconscious regions of mind: Personal unconscious – complexes, feelings, thoughts, memories that guide behavior Collective unconscious – universal memories of common human past Archetypes – images/thoughts that have same meaning for all human beings (dreams, art, literature, religion) Karen Horney - Suggested males had womb envy Childhood anxiety caused by sense of helplessness triggers a desire for life and security

O THER P SYCHOANALYSTS Alfred Adler (Freud’s student) - Inborn feelings of inferiority drive us to adapt, dvp skills, master challenges (compensate) Inferiority Complex – exaggerated sense of inferiority = Overcompensate (cover up, fake) in attempt to remove feelings of inferiority Birth Order First-born, middle child, only Erik Erikson - Lifespan approach to dvpt Psychosocial stages rather than psychosexual stages.

A CTIVITIES - Comparison of Approaches to the Psychoanalytic Theory Describing Terms & Id’ing Theorists Use handout and textbook to complete Part B. Illustrating Theories Freud’s “Iceberg” is a well known diagram of his theory. Create a sketch for the other 4 theorists & theories.
