Susan Chen Language support teacher Educational Background BA, MA, ESL Certified Teaching experience in grades K-5, in the US & TAS Classroom & ESL teacher Married, with 3 daughters who were enrolled in ESL programs in the US and TAS Virginia Blais Language support teacher Educational background MA in TESOL Teaching experience in the US, TYPA,YMCA Classroom & ESL teacher

2 ESL Philosophy of the Sheltered Immersion Model Goals To support and assist each child to develop his/her language skills in listening, speaking, vocabulary, reading and writing To work in the classroom to help each child to be successful in the mainstream program

4 How We Teach Language Skills We establish an individual learning plan with goals for each child We develop listening & speaking skills first We integrate the learning of listening, speaking, reading, writing and vocabulary into first grade themes We teach phonics skills, grammar, and spelling, word wall during the Reading and Writing workshops We use a variety of strategies and activities throughout the year

8 Ten Day Cycle ESL teachers support students across the curriculum in all subject areas in their mainstream classrooms daily. This may involve some “pullout” according to our students’ needs The schedule is flexible throughout the year as the needs of our students change Schedule

12 Supporting your child at home in your native language Talk with your child Use your first language with your child Read to your child every day Enjoy a variety of language experiences together Have high expectations for language usage Plan fun things to do together:  Play board games, card games, or ‘I Spy’  Look at magazines or newspapers together  Go on outings and collect souvenirs to send to someone special  Tell your children family stories or stories about when they were younger, and let them retell them  Listen to songs, stories and poetry on CD, books on tapes, or on an iPod
