Reaching and maintaining a healthier weight is important for your overall health and well-being. If you are significantly overweight, you have a greater risk of developing several diseases and ailments including high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, stroke and some forms of cancer. For obese adults, even losing a few pounds or preventing further weight gain has various health benefits. Reaching a healthier weight is a balancing act. The secret is learning how to balance your “energy in” and “energy out” over your lifetime. “Energy in” is the calories from the foods and beverages you consume each day. “Energy out” is the calories you burn for your basic bodily functions and physical activity on a daily basis.

6 Energy Balance Maintaining Weight – Your weight will stay the same when the calories you eat and drink equal the calories you burn. Losing Weight – You will lose weight when the calories you eat and drink are less than the calories you burn. Gaining Weight – You will gain weight when the calories you eat and drink are greater than the calories you burn.

Many binge eaters are obese. Anorexia Nervosa – an eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and is most common among female teens ages whom feel the need to gain control over their lives and bodies. Many of these people do well in school but have low self-esteem and a poor body image.

10 Eating Disorders (2) Bulimia Nervosa – a condition in which a person eats a large amount of food in a short amount of time and then secretly purges the food via vomiting or taking laxatives. Although these people are not at risk of starving to death from a loss of important nutrients, the frequent vomiting causes stomach acids to erode tooth enamel and injure the mouth and throat. The disorder also causes hormonal imbalances and damage to the kidneys and liver.
