Lessons of Indian Literature Indian literature had two great Hindu epics: – Mahabharata – Ramayana Both illustrated the teachings of Hinduism: – Dharma – Karma – Reincarnation

Buddhism : The Search For Spiritual Peace Buddhism found by Siddhartha Gautama – Young prince searched for spiritual peace. The word Buddha means “Enlightened One”. Siddhartha received by his followers Buddha practiced yoga, a spiritual practice – Combines meditation, breathing practices, specific postures, and nonviolent behavior. Buddhism rejects the social stratification of the Hindu caste system.

Islam in India Brought to western India by Arab traders – In the eighth century A.D First Muslim Kingdom in India was established in Delhi. Muslim expansion continued in India for centuries Muslim conquests eventually led to the establishment of the Mughal.

Chinese Literature Longest living civilization Existed nearly 4,000 yrs. Created an alphabet of more than 3,000 characters Started a literary tradition that continues today.

Chou Dynasty Longest- lasting dynasty in Chinese history Overthrew the Shang Established a structure of imperial rule Used until early twentieth century
