MATHEMATICS Area of Rectilinear Shapes
2
Lesson Objectives The aim of this powerpoint is to help you… practice using the formulas for the areas of rectangles and triangles calculate the area of rectilinear shapes
3
Area Formulae In order to calculate the area of compound or rectilinear shapes, you will need to recall the formulae for the area of a rectangle and the area of a triangle. These formulae are: Area of Rectangle = Length × Width Area of Triangle = ½ of Base × Perp. Height
4
What is a Rectilinear Shape? A rectilinear shape is one made up of rectangles, triangles or parts thereof. Here are some examples…
5
Area of Rectilinear Shapes To begin to find the area of a rectilinear shape, first cut the shape into its component rectangles and/or triangles Find the area of each component and add these areas altogether for the area of the whole shape. Sometimes it is quicker to take the area of a missing component away from a larger one!
6
Example Find the area of this rectilinear shape: 7m 4m 2m 6m 2m
7
Example: 2 Methods Area A = 7m × 2m = 14m² Area B = 2m × 3m = 6m² Area C = 7m × 6m = 42m² Total Area = 62m² Area D = 7m × 10m = 70m² Area E = 2m × 4m = 8m² Total Area = 62m² C E D 7m 4m 2m6m 2m 7m 4m 2m6m 2m B A

What next? Print out the notes called PAV2c-Area. Read through them and make sure you answer any questions. Save and complete the worksheet called AreaC-S1.xlsx Now move on to the PAV3 powerpoint
