2. u Trim trees and shrubbery away from exterior walls and roof lines. u Landscape plantings offer pests access to buildings. Landscape

3. u Thoroughly inspect grounds on a routine basis for evidence of pests such as fire ants, yellowjackets, etc. u Limit the use of pesticides in playgrounds. Playgrounds

4. u Administrative areas are much less likely to have pest problems, but periodic inspections are still necessary. Front Office/Media Center

5. u Pest problems can be very severe in the school cafeteria.  Sanitation is essential. Close, careful inspection of the dining hall is very important. Kitchen 1

6. u The tube framing of cafeteria tables provides excellent refuge for cockroaches. u Closely inspect these areas and keep them clean. Gel baits can be safely placed here. Kitchen 2

7. u The serving line can create pest problems as a result of uncleaned spills and droppings. u Clean these areas on a daily basis. Kitchen 3

8. u Store trays only after they are properly cleaned and fully dried. u Even small amounts of water left behind can sustain a pest population. Kitchen 4

9. u Food debris is often spilled or left behind at the tray and silverware return areas. Thoroughly clean these areas on a daily basis. Kitchen 5

10. u Keep areas under kitchen equipment clean and dry. u These are preferred hiding places for many pests. Kitchen 6

11. u Store dish washing racks only after they are cleaned and dried. u Inspect floor drains often. Kitchen 7

12. u Do not store items within cardboard boxes. u Discard leaky or damaged goods. Correct Incorrect Dry Storage Area

13. u Remove garbage from the cafeteria on a daily basis. u Close lids on all garbage containers. Incorrect Garbage Storage/Removal

14. u Store classroom items in a well kept manner to facilitate pest inspections. u Keep areas near windows and doors clear. Incorrect Classrooms 1

15. u Many pest species use classroom sinks as a water source. u Cleanliness in this area is a must. Classrooms 2

16.  Prevent pest populations through sanitation and exclusion practices.  Apply pesticides only as needed.  Select the least hazardous pesticide to control the pests.  Target pesticides to areas not contacted by or accessible to the students, faculty or staff. Remember the Four Steps of IPM
