2 How We Got Our Start… Being a small community, mental health resources are limited requiring creative and collaborative solutions to address our social service needs. 2001, Madison County Family Council identified the need for a coordinated response to crisis or disaster situations that could occur in our community. By August of 2002, the CRT was a viable entity. With the support and approval of the Madison County Commissioners, coordination of the Crisis Response Team was transferred to the Madison County Emergency Management Agency and has become a significant component of our local Homeland Security strategy.

3 Our Purpose… Assist local mental health in dealing with large scale or everyday identified crisis. Identified the need to free up affected school personnel. Encourage members to perform outreach. Assist school with Crisis Plan Reviews & Development Began working with the Fire & EMS service to provide debriefings.

4 Who We Have On Our Team? Clergy Mental health professionals School counselors Teachers Social workers Public health professionals Victim advocates Law enforcement Private citizens with counselor training

5 What We Have Done… Industrial Accidents Infant Deaths Student Suicides Teacher Deaths Accidental Student Deaths House Fires Debriefings with First Responders Since 2003 the team has responded to… Bank Robberies Flu Clinics State Responses National Responses Full Scale Exercises Hundreds of Outreach Attempts

6 What We Do… Group or Individual Crisis Intervention ◦ This is NOT mental health ◦ Begins the healing process for most individuals ◦ Assist individuals who need further assistance / care ◦ Provide education Incident Debriefings Assist with Death Notification Companioning THIS IS NOT COUNSELING OR MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT!!!!

7 We Stay Together By… NOVA Training Monthly or Quarterly Meetings Recognizing Members After Response Regular Exercises ◦ Skills Test Teaching Disaster Psychology during the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Trainings. FUN!

9 National & International Training We have developed in-depth trainings on: ◦ school response protocols ◦ small team development Presentations at the National NOVA Conference for the past 3 years. Presented in Guam and Saipan Fall of 2012. ◦ Assisted in the review of school crisis plans. The 2013 National NOVA Conference will be held in Columbus Sept. 15 th - 18 th

10 What Is Next For Us… Integration into Local County Emergency Operations Plans Working in the Emergency Operations Center staffing the call center. Refresher DVD Conducting trainings for the local first responders. Working with the Madison County Suicide Prevention Coalition.

11 Ohio Crisis Response Team Currently 118 members on the state team from all over Ohio.
