1
States (Phases) of Matter
2
Particle Movement All particles in a substance are in constant motion.
3
Solids Substances with definite shape and volume
Molecules are packed very close together Molecules vibrate slowly in place Highly organized Usually have the highest density of the 3 states
4
Liquids Substances with definite volume but no definite shape (take the shape of their container) Molecules are moderately spaced Molecules move slowly around each other Not highly organized
5
Gases Substances with no definite volume and no definite shape (unless contained) Molecules are extremely far apart Molecules move very quickly around each other (up to speeds of 500 m/s) Not at all organized Least dense of the 3 states of matter
6
Solid, Liquid, Gas
7
Physical Properties A characteristic of matter that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the matter A physical change alters the physical properties of matter, but does not change the identity of the matter What are some physical properties? Volume, mass, density, hardness, color, texture
