A SOFTWARE DESIGNER A Software Designer is one of the best jobs for technology in the world. Software developers have their fingerprints all over our lives. That alarm clock app that woke you from a dead sleep this morning was designed by at least one software developer. Designing programs is the job's most identifiable component, but these tech-savvy professionals have many other responsibilities, including testing and debugging the software and maintaining and improving it once it's in operation.

THE REQUIREMENTS Depending on the employer, software engineer education degree requirements range from an associate’s degree to a master’s degree. An associate’s degree might be sufficient for some entry-level positions, but a bachelor’s degree is required for most software engineering jobs, while more complex jobs might require a master’s degree. Aspiring software designers usually major in computer science, computer information systems, software engineering or mathematics. Some students take programming and software engineering classes to supplement a degree in another field, such as accounting, business or finance.

THERE SALARY The Labor Department reports that software developers made a median salary of $90,060 in 2012. The highest-paid 10 percent in the profession earned $138,880 in 2012, while the lowest-paid earned $55,190. 75th Percentile $113,280 Median $90,060 25th Percentile $70,850

EXTRA INFO. While jobs are still scarce in many industries, software developers are in "absolute explosive demand.” "We're seeing a gap between the number of software engineers we need and the number the education system is generating... this is a terrific area to invest oneself." Software developers are involved in all aspects of software creation, from writing code to debugging programs to overseeing the launch of new software.

CONTINUED… Software developers sometimes involves long hours and tight deadlines, so it can be stressful. Software developers work in comfortable settings, however, and telecommuting is becoming increasingly common. The salaries of software developers vary depending on education, experience, and skill level.
