Analogy Deadline  Today 3/3/15 7:00AM  Thursday: Revisions Are Due  Project Due 3/16

Review Analogies (10 Minutes)  Helpful comments  Do you understand the function of the organelle from the description  Do you understand how the analogy fits?  Are they strong analogies  What are three good things

What is a testable Question?

What is a “Testable Question?” A questions that can be answered by designing, conducting, and explaining an experiment.

Must have Variables  Dependent/ responding variable  Independent/ manipulated variable  Controlled variables

What is the difference  Independent variable (Manipulated) :  the variable that is changed or manipulated by the researcher, and  Dependent variable (Responding):  the response that is measured.  Control Variable:  Conditions that are kept the same in the experiment

Examples: Non-Testable : Does carbon dioxide in the atmosphere cause the atmosphere to warm? Testable : What is the effect of carbon dioxide on atmosphere temperature?

Teacher Led Problem 2 Non-Testable : Is achievement in school higher when students are tested frequently? Testable : What is the effect of testing on student achievement?

Why can’t we drink sea water? http://loldamn.com/wilson.html  Is this a testable question?  Divide up into your lab groups

Why can’t we drink sea water? http://loldamn.com/wilson.html  read pg: 281-283 (including the reading)  Stop after you read #11  Write a set of procedures  following the Protocol  The last number of your protocol is found at the top of the page on 283  Tomorrow you will switch procedures  Finally you will write up a short lab report

Lab Report Due on Thursday End of Class  Need a Testable Question  Hypothesis  Materials  Procedures  Results  Conclusion  Restate : Restate the lab experiment. Describe the assignment.  Explain : Explain the purpose of the lab. What were you trying to figure out or discover? Talk briefly about the procedure you followed to complete the lab.  Results : Explain your results. Confirm whether or not your hypothesis was supported by the results.  Uncertainties : Account for uncertainties and errors. Explain, for example, if there were other circumstances beyond your control that impacted the experiment.  New : Discuss new questions or discoveries that emerged from the experiment.
