Summer Leadership School (SLS) SLS is set up and run by Bellevue East AFJROTC each summer at the end of the school year The official name is “AFJROTC Lewis & Clark Leadership Challenge” It is held at Camp Ashland, Nebraska Army National Guard Base, near Ashland, NE The dates fall on the Tuesday after Memorial Day through that Saturday morning for a graduation ceremony.

Inbriefing Students learn the rules of the camp and are divided into groups called “Flights”

Flights are Formed Students are given hats and T-shirts that identify them by Flight

Flight Activities Flights memorize the names of all members, and perform group activities to bond as a team.

Reveille! Students are woken abruptly by reveille at 5 AM to fall out for physical training!

Group Run Cadets choose to walk a mile, run a mile, or run two miles after warm-ups

Inspection and Drill Flights undergo uniform inspection and drill (marching) together

Inspection and Drill Some cadets get to lead the others

Group Activities Teamwork is fostered through group activities

Sports Afternoon sports are played such as volleyball and ultimate frisbee

Rappelling Students rappell under the supervision of Army instructors

Electronic Firing Range Students try a firing simulator (no live weapons are used)

Water “Survival” Students get to have fun in the Mahoney State Park pool.

Flight Photos Flights take a group photo on the last day.

Graduation and Awards A graduation ceremony is held and parents, family and friends may attend.

College AFROTC Cadet Staff College AFROTC cadets volunteer their time to run the camp.

Costs The fee normally ranges from $100-$125. For those that can’t afford the full fee, we may be able to subsidize some costs if the cadet works concessions to earn money. The fee includes transportation, room, all meals for the week, a hat, several T-shirts, and admission to the Mahoney State Park pool. Cadets are supervised by college ROTC cadets and teachers from each school bringing cadets. Instructors sleep over at the camp, and chaperones sleep in the barracks with cadets. Females are in a separate building with female officer supervision.
