1
SCIENTIFIC METHOD Read each slide. Look carefully at each picture. Answer each question.
2
All scientists follow rules when conducting an experiment. These rules are called the SCIENTIFIC METHOD.
3
Scientists follow these rules so other scientists can perform the same experiments.
4
Scientists perform each experiment at least 3 times.
5
They want to make sure that each experiment really works.
6
The first thing you need is a PROBLEM.
7
Next you make a guess about what will happen during your experiment. This is your
8
Next you do the experiment to find out what happens.
9
1 2 3 Remember that you must do each experiment at least three times.
10
Now you have the results of your experiments. Results are called DATA.
11
Data can be shown in many different ways. This is a bar graph.
12
This is a pie graph.
13
This is a line graph.
14
Sometimes scientists put their data together into a report.
15
After looking at the results you decide on a CONCLUSION.
16
When you do an experiment use your 5 senses to make careful observations.
17
Remember to record your observations and data into a: graph or
18
a chart..or
19
a table
20
or your journal.
21
It is important to record your results for others to see. You must use scientific words and measurement when your write about your results.
22
Scientists don’t say, “It is cold.” “It is cold,” is a personal opinion.
23
You might say, “It is 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
24
Scientists say, “It is zero degrees Celsius.
25
A scientist would never say, “The flower is tall.”
26
A scientist would say, “It is 30 centimeters from the ground to the petals.”
27
Scientists measure everything!
28
They measure the volume of liquids in liters.
29
They measure the mass of an object in grams.
30
They measure the length of an object in meters.
31
A meter can be broken down into smaller units to measure smaller things. CENT means 100. There are 100 cents in 1 dollar.
32
There are 100 centimeters in 1 meter.
33
You can buy soda in liter bottles.
34
The mass of an object is measured in grams.
35
This MARS Ice Cream bar weighs 50 grams or has a mass of 50 grams.
36
This puppy had a weight of 500 grams or a mass of 500 grams when he was born.
37
We ask, “How much does it weigh?” A scientist asks, “What is the mass of the object?”
38
Meters, grams and liters are all ways to measure using the METRIC system. Scientists always use the METRIC system.
39
QUIZ 1.The rules all scientists follow when they perform an experiment are called the _______________________ 2. What is another word for HYPOTHESIS?___________ 3. What are some types of graphs you can use to show your results or your data? _______________________ 4. Scientists measure everything! What system do they use to measure? ______________________________ 5. What does the word cent mean? _________________
