9. Timing Matters ▪Apply in first or second year of grad school for major fellowships ▪Note deadlines and allow six to twelve months for national fellowships! Make a schedule, backing up from the submission date ▪Most major deadlines occur in fall. Use summer and class projects to develop ideas and hone essays ▪Learn to write daily ▪Give referees plenty of time, and provide polite reminders as the deadline approaches
