8 Trojan War 10 year war that took place in 1200 BC Involved Mycenaean's & Trojans (Troy) Legend states that the war began because a Trojan prince kidnapped Helen, a Greek queen. The historical accuracy is debated since the description of the war comes from Greek & Roman epic poems.

9 Homer Blind Greek poet who traveled from village to village telling heroic tales Orally passed on Known for Iliad & Odyssey Iliad provides information about the Trojan War – Main character Achilles Fun Fact: “Achilles heel” --“area of weakness, vulnerable spot”

10 Did the Trojan War happen? To Ancient Greeks the Trojan War was definitely an historical event. They believed that the legends they heard were documentation from their ancestors about a city called Troy located in modern day Turkey. Within 1000 years most people believed that it was simply an epic poem like many Greek Myths, culturally believed but not historically accurate. Then in 1870 a German archaeologist excavated a site he believed was Troy. He discovered nine cities, each built on top of the other after they were destroyed. Many scholars today believe that the 7 th city’s design was similar to Homer’s depiction and was destroyed around the same time. However, the city was clearly destroyed by an earthquake which causes more controversy

11 -Why was the Trojan Horse created? -What was Odyssey's’ plan for the horse? -How did the Mycenaean army get into the Trojan city? -Did the Trojan horse idea work? Explain. Trojan Horse
