Impressionism Impressionism: is a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris based artists. Their independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870’s and 1880’s, in spite of harsh opposition from the conventional art community in France.
3
When started When start: Impressionism began to take shape in the 1860’s on the canvases of Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, and Pierre- Auguste Renoir. But the actual birth of Impressionism was probably the summer of 1869, when Manet and Renoir painted views of a swimming resort at La Grenouillère on the Seine.
4
The techniques The Impressionists distanced themselves from the somber tones of earlier paintings. They generally avoided the use of black and earth colors and instead used light, vibrant colors to give their paintings luminosity and to capture the changing effect of sunlight on the scenes they painted.
5
Appreciation in the beginning Although some people appreciated the new paintings, many did not. The critics and the public agreed the Impressionists couldn’t draw and their colors were considered vulgar. Their compositions were strange. Their short, slapdash brushstrokes made their paintings practically illegible.
