6 ‘Bipolar disorder‘Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental illness that brings severe high and low moods and changes in sleep, energy, thinking, and behavior’.manic depressionmental illnesssleep

7 BIPOLAR DISORDER  A person with bipolar disorder can have periods which are different from each other.  These periods are called Mania and Depression.  In mania state, person feels overly confident and excited.  In depression state, depressive symptoms and too much sadness can be seen.  Because they are extreme, they can prevent people from their daily life.

9 SYMPTOMS  An overly joyful or overexcited state is called a manic episode, and an extremely sad or hopeless state is called a depressive episode.  Sometimes, a mood episode includes symptoms of both mania and depression. This is called a mixed state.

10 SYMPTOMS OF MANIA OR MANIC EPISODE Mood Changes  An overly long period of feeling "high," or an overly happy or outgoing mood.  Extreme irritability.

11 SYMPTOMS OF MANIA OR MANIC EPISODE Behaviour Changes  Talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another, having racing thoughts.  Being unusually distracted.  Increasing activities, such as taking on multiple new projects.  Being overly restless.  Sleeping little or not being tired.  Having an unrealistic belief in your abilities.  Behaving impulsively and engaging in pleasurable, high-risk behaviors.

12 SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION OR DEPRESSIVE EPISODE Mood Changes:  An overly long period of feeling sad or hopeless.  Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, including sex.

13 SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION OR DEPRESSIVE EPISODE Behavioral Changes  Feeling overly tired or "slowed down" Having problems concentrating, remembering, and making decisions.  Being restless or irritable.  Changing eating, sleeping, or other habits  Thinking of death or suicide, or attempting suicide.

14 TREATMENTS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER  Bipolar disorder has several different treatments which can be categorized as comprehensive treatments, medication treatments, therapy, and complementary treatments for bipolar disorder. o Comprehensive Treatments o Medication Treatments o Therapy o Complementary Treatments

15 WHAT ARE THE COMPREHENSIVE TREATMENTS?  Education – Managing symptoms and preventing complications begins with a thorough knowledge of your illness. Knowing and being aware of your ilness is crucial for treatment of bipolar disorder.  Lifestyle management – By carefully regulating your lifestyle, you can keep symptoms and mood episodes to a minimum, such as, a regular sleep schedule, avoiding alcohol and drugs.

16 WHAT ARE THE MEDICATION TREATMENTS?  Check in frequently with your doctor.  Continue taking your medication, even if your mood is stable.  Don’t expect medication to fix all your problems.  Be extremely cautious with antidepressants.

17 WHAT ARE THE THERAPIES FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER?  Cognitive-behavioral therapy  Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy  Family-focused therapy

18 WHAT ARE THE COMPLEMENTARY TREATMENTS FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER?  Light and dark therapy  Mindfulness meditation  Acupuncture
