Energy Definition of Chemistry THE STUDY OF MATTER AND ENERGY INTERACTION S WITH THE EMPHASIS ON MATTER. Energy is the ability to do work Work : When their applied force on an object makes the object travel through a distance parallel with the force. Energy = Force X Distance Energy = Motion
7
Heat Heat has two conditions all the time Two different temperatures where there is movement from the hot object (higher kinetic energy) to a lower temperature (lower kinetic energy) The energy of heat has to be moving so that the molecules inside the object reach an equilibrium
8
Scientific Method Hypothesis – An educated guess that attempts to explain an observation or answer a question Theory – A hypothesis that has been tested with a significant amount of data Scientific law – A theory that has been tested by and is consistent with generations of data Grand Theory - large body of knowledge which laws, observations, theories and facts are put under that to gives a big working idea how God created a significant part of creation. – i.e. Atomic Theory: refers to atoms and they function, Gravitational Theory: How the forces gravity work 8
9
Well-substantiated Incorporate facts Laws Inferences Tested hypothesis. Grand Theory 9
10
Aristotle Disproven 10 In 1668, Francesco Redi, an Italian physician, did an experiment with flies and wide-mouth jars containing meat. Spontaneous generation lasted 1900 years before proven wrong
11
Louis Pasteur proved “Only Life begets life” 1859 11
12
The First Law of Thermodynamics Energy or (matter) can not be created or destroyed in the environment measured. You start with 10 grams of wood before it is burned you will have 10 grams of its burned products after is burned. 10 grams started = 10 grams ended 10 grams started = 9.9999999 grams + energy ended with
13
Changing Forms of Energy Potential Energy = Energy stored. – Energy stored in the chemical bonds Kinetic Energy = Energy that is moving – Energy released in the breaking of chemical bonds with heat and light
14
Heat Energy Units James Prescott Joule a diligent scientists and devout Christian did pioneering work with heat energy and is distinguished with metric unit of heat. Lift up 102 flies 1 fly = 1 gram one yard high at constant speed = 1 Joule 1 calorie = 4.184 joules 1 Calorie (food) = 4184 joules 1 Calorie (food) = 1000 calories
15
Temperature Units Ice Freezing Steam Boiling
16
Conversions C 0 = 5/9 ( 0 F-32) F 0 = 9/5 0 C + 32 Temperature (T) directly measures the kinetic action of molecules. The higher the T the higher kinetic energy. The theoretical T in which molecules cease to move. - 273.15 0 C The true measure temperature is in Kelvin (K) K = 0 C + 273.15 K 0 C = K – 273.15
