Smart Core and Core Graduation Paths Core Graduation Math Requirements 4 Units – One (1) unit of Algebra or equivalent [Algebra A&B] – One (1) unit of Geometry or equivalent [Geometry A&B] – All math units must build on the base of algebra and geometry knowledge and skills. – Comparable concurrent credit courses may be substituted where applicable. http://www.arkansased.org/public/userfiles/Legal/Legal-Current%20Rules/ade_282_standards_0709_current.pdf NOTICE: Changes in the Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship requirements mandate that students graduating in 2014 and beyond must graduate under Smart Core.

Smart Core and Core Graduation Paths Smart Core Graduation Math Requirements 4 Units [at least one unit must be gained in either 11 th or 12 th grade] – Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II must all be completed* – One unit above and beyond Algebra II Advanced Topics and Modeling in Mathematics Algebra III Calculus Linear Systems and Statistics Mathematical Applications and Algorithms Pre-Calculus College Board AP Math Courses** International Baccalaureate Courses** Concurrent Math Courses http://www.arkansased.org/public/userfiles/Legal/Legal-Current%20Rules/ade_282_standards_0709_current.pdf

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) Accessing the Common Core State Standards: www.corestandards.org While there are other sites out there that are related to the CCSS, www.corestandards.org is the official site.
5
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) How to read the CCSSM – Grade level standards are categorized by 3 different groupings or “grain sizes” Standards – define what students should understand and be able to do. Clusters – are groups of related standards. Domains – larger groups of related standards.

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) How to read the PARCC Model Content Frameworks (MCF) http://www.parcconline.org/parcc-model-content-frameworks http://www.parcconline.org/parcc-model-content-frameworks – The MCF provides the following information: Individual end-of-course overviews Examples of key advances from previous grades or courses Discussion of Mathematical Practices in relation to course content Fluency recommendations Pathway summary table Assessment limits table for standards assessed on more than one end-of-course test.
8
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) The MCF identify course specific emphasis for the standards Course emphases include: – Major Content – Supporting Content – Additional Content

Algebra II Reminders: – Has a pre-requisite of Algebra I or Algebra A & B – Can not be taken concurrently with the new Bridge to Algebra II course
15
Algebra II Reminders: – Not a requirement under the Core Graduation pathway, but schools need to help students and parents make informed decisions that are in the best interest of the student. Is graduating a student with 4 credits for Algebra I and Geometry in that student’s best interest? Students will still need another course above Algebra II to be classified as SmartCore
16
SmartCore and the Academic Challenge Scholarship Students should be reminded of eligibility changes for the Arkansas Academic Challenge (Lottery) Scholarship, which require students graduating in 2014 and beyond to graduate under Smart Core. http://www.adhe.edu/divisions/financialaid/P ages/fa_acs.aspx http://www.adhe.edu/divisions/financialaid/P ages/fa_acs.aspx
17
Algebra II Sequencing: – What about our February of 2012 recommendation? Algebra I -> Algebra II -> Geometry or Algebra I -> Geometry -> Algebra II – Suggested sequencing based on PARCC approved college and career readiness determination: Algebra I -> Geometry -> Algebra II
18
Algebra II Sequencing – How does the new Bridge to Algebra II (BTAII) fit in? Before Geometry, concurrently with Geometry, or after Geometry but before Algebra II Quick reminder BTAII DOES NOT count as a fourth math credit under SmartCore!
19
Algebra II Framework Document for Algebra II – Algebra II Committee based development Familiar form Precise language PARCC alignment
20
Algebra II – Algebra II Appendix The committee worked to unpack the standards and place them within themes or umbrellas of instruction. We have included those themes as an appendix to the document.
21
Algebra II Algebra II (Themes overview) – Frame for local planning – Incorporates PARCC Model Content Frameworks Emphases – Optional not Prescriptive
22
Algebra II In the spring of 2013, a committee composed of Arkansas educators categorized each standard into themes, which could frame the sequencing or organization of the content. – Statistics (S) – Compare and Analyze (CA) – Create and Model (CM) – Compute and Solve (CS)
