Mobile Rewards Clipper VTA Hack My Ride Wolfram Schneider ~ John Mock ~ Renee McLaughlin for
2
Benefits for User Smartphone management of the Clipper card One less plastic card in wallet Prevent searching for (misplaced or lost) plastic clipper card No need to buy a ticket at vending machine or use the RFID reader when bus/train is already there Possibility to auto reload the Clipper balance Rewards and incentives to use public transportation Waiting in line at the RFID reader
3
Benefits for VTA Increased ridership due to incentives (coupons, rewards and validation for using public transportation) Data gathering and analytics In addition to knowing when riders get on, VTA also will collect data when they get off Better transportation planning, because data shows how certain routes or specific sections of routes are utilized Image gain for VTA as an innovative technology driver in Silicon Valley Automated iBeacon check-in on transit, especially at events, results in reduced fuel consumption and cost saving
4
Benefits for Community/City Reduced congestion on roadways and at traffic lights Parking relief Easy connection to neighboring cities and lively hubs Example: downtown San Jose to downtown Mountain View and downtown Campbell Stimulate economy for local businesses due to coupons and “VTA validation” Attract new (retail) businesses to downtown San Jose Improves attractiveness of downtown Reduction of carbon footprint
5
What is needed? Card validation options (fare inspectors and businesses) Changing color code (like on VTA Event Ticket app) NFC/iBeacon gaining market adoption Already in Android phones Now Apple rolls it out for Apple Pay Barcode not preferred (expensive hardware, shaky reading in moving buses) Electronic beacons have to be installed on transit Low cost with accurate identification of specific train/bus VTA and local businesses (and maybe San Jose City) need to negotiate and agree on a “VTA validation” program Similar to parking validation, but for people using public transportation
6
Implementation Decision to use APPCityLife User Analytics back to VTA Sustainable revenue from Coupons for VTA Keeping up with future technology and trends No need to employ expensive programmers and/or keep in contact with original developers due to using templates and modules instead of Android and iPhone program code APPCityLife have a proven track record of successfully working with public transportation agencies on their application needs Prototype implemented in iPhone The following screens show the conceptual implementation
7
Home screen Electronic Clipper Card Image of ecopass or image of traditional Clipper card Show balance and/or expiration date/time Track miles on transit Reward program to be defined by VTA, for example, every 100 miles: Add 5$ to Clipper card Gift cards Coupons for local businesses

Add to Clipper Upload picture of personal ecopass Add money to Clipper card (same options as at platform pay stations) Pay service to be determined by VTA May use existing vendor as used in VTA Event App Alignment with contract between VTA and Clipper Credit card Google Wallet Apple pay
10
Clipper Validation Card validation options Changing color code NFC VTA negotiate with local businesses on how to validate Clipper ticket Examples: $2 for a one-way ticket or $4 for a two-way ticket This is a great opportunity for VTA to get more riders to use VTA (e.g. parking free and going to downtown), but also will benefit the businesses since they get more customers
11
Nearby Coupons Show coupons of local businesses that are close to the current location of a train or bus use real route tracking to display places close to the current location of a train/bus
