Australian context – 2013/2014 Australian Govt spent: $9.8 Billion on residential care homes + $1.3 Billion on home care packages 254 929 people > residential care homes 83 144 people > home care packages 775 900 people over 65 (over 50 for Aboriginal people) > Home and Community Care

Aged Care Home Residents 75% require high levels of care 77% are 80+ years old 30% are 90+ years old 69% are female 18% were born in non-English speaking countries

Australian context – 2013/2014 2718 aged care homes - 1328 providers For every 1000 people aged 70+: 82 aged care home places 192 834 aged care home places (June 2014) Many community based support organizations which partner with aged care homes: respite, hospital avoidance, hospice, allied health, social inclusion, mental health services, churches, visiting pets

Trends Older people living longer and being more educated than previous generations Families less able/available to provide support With longer life comes increased capacity to contribute to home and community but also increased risk of Dementia and chronic disease

Aged Care Workforce 3.1% of the Australian workforce (352 145 people) 90% of carers are female Most employed part time Volunteers: about 3 million Unpaid carers: 2.7 million (11% of the population) Looming workforce shortage!
