Dogs have 18 different muscles that move each ear. Dogs can see some colors like blue, yellow, and gray. Dogs can hear sounds four times farther away than people. Dogs sweat through the pads of their feet. Domestic dogs have been companions to people for more then 15,000 years. There are more then 400 different breeds of dogs.

Small dogs live longer than large dogs. Small dogs may live 20 years. Giant dogs like Great Danes may live eight years. Mixed breed dogs live for about 13 to 14 years.

Dogs can help people with farm work and hunting. They help keep people safe. Dogs help people with disabilities.

Besides using their voices to bark,growl or whine dogs also use different parts of their bodies. A wagging tail does not always mean that a dog is happy.

Did you now that the first living creature to visit outer space was a dog? Include breeds that work as police dogs, guard dogs, search-and-rescue dogs and sled dogs. Some hounds use their extra-strong sense of smell to follow animals and help police to find missing people.

Puppies in the same litter might different in other ways too. Some puppies are very playful other puppies like to stay close to their mom.

Puppies’ eyes are sealed shut at birth. Their eyes only open when they are around ten to fourteen days old. Puppies begin to hear when they are about 18 days old. They start to get teeth at 6 weeks old.

Dogs don’t smile when they are happy. They wag their tail. When dogs show their teeth they are angry. Dogs can follow a scent or the smell of a person or object and track it for many miles.
