Career In 1950, Cooper graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology. He went from there to join the Naval Reserves and worked with destroyers and submarines. The call that started it all Standing on the corner off of 53 rd Street in Manhattan, Martin Cooper dialed his leading competitor’s number who worked for Bell Labs, Joel S. Engel. He told him the race was over… He had made the first ever call over a cell phone.

Martin Cooper Today April 3 rd of this year was the 40 th anniversary of being able to make phone calls. He is now 84 years old and works in the Silicon Valley.
