SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT #1: CREATE A VALUE SCALE CHART ILLUSTRATING THE PENCIL GRADES OF THE SIX VARIETIES OF DRAWING PENCILS AVAILABLE IN THIS CLASS. YOU ARE TO LABEL THEM IN THE CORRECT ORDER (HARD TO SOFT) AND SHOW THE VALUE OF EACH PENCIL GRADE FROM DARK TO LIGHT PRESSURE. CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ACCURACY WILL BE PART OF YOUR GRADE FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN SET OF DRAWING PENCILS, YOU MAY WISH TO ILLUSTRATE THOSE PENCIL GRADES AS WELL.

11 Dry Media Varieties Chalk
Ancient drawing material similar to charcoal – used in cave drawings Natural Carbons – Blacks Iron Oxides – Red tones Umbers – Variety of browns Ochres – Earthy Yellows Chalk – White Often used with tinted paper, in order to give the drawing an additional color Varieties of hardnesses, as well as their oil content and color intensity

12 Dry Media Varieties Chalk
Pastels – Softest & driest of chalk Pastels are used in a similar manner as painting Chalks – Harder & lighter Chalks are used more in linear fashions, like charcoal Must be sprayed with fixative Experimentation – apply chalk to damp paper to create a similar effect as painting but it must be sprayed with fixative after OR dip chalk in liquid starch, which doesn’t have to be sprayed

13 Sketchbook Assignment #3:
In this sketchbook assignment, you are to create shapes or forms using multiple colors in order to complete the task. Experiment with chalk pastels using the following techniques: Dip chalk into a cup of water Dampen your paper Dry

Oil, pigment & binder Firm, not powdery Thick, Bold Lines

15 Sketchbook Assignment #4:
Create a page of experimentations using oil pastels. You are required to use the following techniques: Blending Stippling Hatching Cross-Hatching Scratching

16 BELL RINGER One person from the table grab a tote on the counter and place in the middle of your table. Another person should get everyone’s sketchbooks/papers from the cabinet drawer. Finish the pages you did not complete last week.

17 DRY MEDIA VARIETIES CONTE CRAYON, WAX CRAYON, COLORED PENCIL
Fine textured and oily material More adhesive quality than chalk or charcoal 3 Degrees of intensity: No. 1 Hard, No. 2 Medium, No. 3 Soft 4 Colors: White, Black, Sepia, Sanguine (an earthy red color-most popular) Wax Crayon Paraffin –Binder Color can be applied and blended with a paper towel, as well as they can be applied heavily and scratched away to create a sgraffito effect Apply India Ink to the surface Wax resist Colored Pencils Pigment, Clay and Medium Woodless & Wood Encased Watercolor Pencils

19 Sketchbook Assignment #5:
For this page of your sketchbook, you are going to try various techniques using crayons. Color very heavy and using a scratching tool, create a sgraffito drawing Try creating a value scale of one color, going from dark to light Try blending colors together using your finger or a tissue. Color a small image and add watercolor paint on top of your drawing to create a wax resist Color a small image and add India ink on top of the drawing

20 Tonal Value Techniques
Light and dark tones can be created in your drawing by using the media appropriate but also using these techniques illustrated and described on page 8 in the “Drawing” book. Please reference these techniques, choose 6 of the 9 to use to draw the still life at your table. Remember to choose the appropriate material for the technique you are drawing.
