Spending Time with Jesus!

Acts 4:13 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

SPENDING TIME with JESUS: From the Sermon on the Mount, From Matthew 6:5-15 Jesus is teaching us about PRAYER!

Matthew 6:5-6 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

Matthew 6:7-8 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

Matthew 6:9-10 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed (holy) be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Verse 10 is a very powerful prayer all by itself: 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done… 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done… in my life… (heart/desires – mind/thoughts) in my marriage… in my family… in my church… in my city… in my nation… on earth… as it is in heaven!

Two other very powerful prayers of my life are: “Father God, break my heart with the things which break Your heart! In Jesus’ name. Amen!

Two other very powerful prayers of my life are: “Father God, there is so much brokenness, hurt, abuse and dis-ease in the world. We desperately need the leading of Your Holy Spirit moment by moment and day by day to know how to share Your salvation, Your healing and Your wholeness with others through prayer, worship, service, preaching, teaching and counseling. Show us how, Lord! Lead us by Your Spirit! In Jesus’ name. Amen!

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

“Life is so daily!”

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

Matthew 6:14,15 14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 18:21-35

Learning to FORGIVE is very important for us. We must learn to forgive ourselves. We must learn how to forgive others. We are designed for relationship, but we live in a fallen world so learning to forgive ourselves and others is crucial for a healthy, whole life!

Ephesians 4:32 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

The Greek word Matthew uses here which is most often translated “temptation” means “test or trial.” In English this is mostly a negative word, but in Greek it is more of a neutral word.

James also uses this Greek word (peirasmos) throughout his book. In James 1:2,12, the word means “test or trial,” but in verse 13, it is used to think of a temptation as we normally think of it. Therefore, sometimes the same Greek word refers to a test, trial or hardship, and other times it refers to a temptation in the moral or spiritual realm – an enticement to evil.

The key in all of this is that we can conclude that God will not lead us into temptation – but He will allow us to be tested.

Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan.

As we consider all of this, we must remember: You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

For Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom…

For Yours, O Lord, is the power…

For Yours, O Lord, is the glory forever. Amen.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Engaging our hearts and our minds with this prayer is a total re-orientation of our lives to God, to God’s will and to His kingdom purposes!
