Tragedy- ends in the death of one or more of the main characters. – Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar Comedy- usually has a happy ending, and can also include jokes, farce, and innuendo. Usually love stories – Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream Tragicomedy- mixture of comedy and tragedy. Play seems to move toward a tragic ending, but a twist in the plot saves the characters – The Winter’s Tale Satirical Comedies- attack ideas or individuals by laughing at them. Have more cynical tone than comedies – The Alchemist History Plays- usually tell the stories of great leaders and kings. Shakespeare sometimes altered what he found in history books to suit dramatic purposes and make plays exciting. – Henry VI (Parts 1,2, and 3), Richard III, King John

A comedy written around 1590 to 1591 Synopsis: Petruchio, from Verona, tries to woe the destructive Katharine as his wife. Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship, but Petruchio trials her with various psychological torments—the "taming"—until she becomes a compliant and obedient bride. Some productions hat have been inspired by this production are Kiss me Kate, the musical, and Ten Things I Hate About You.
