2 Climate Zones

3 What is Latitude? Latitude- horizontal parallel lines on a map that measure distance north and south of the Equator.

4 What is climate? A climate is weather over a long period of time. Climate is what the weather is normally like in any place.

5 Important latitude lines for climate zones
The Equator, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, and the Arctic and Antarctic circles are the lines we use to divide the world into climate zones

6 Where are the climate zones?
Polar Zone Arctic Circle Temperate Zone Tropic of Cancer Tropic Zone Equator Tropic of Capricorn Temperate Zone Antarctic Circle Polar Zone

7 Where are the climate zones?
The Polar Zones: north of the Arctic Circle, south of the Antarctic Circle and are cold all year long

8 Where are the climate zones?
The Temperate Zones: between the Arctic circle and the tropic of Cancer and the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of Capricorn.

9 What are the climate zones like?
The Temperate Zones have temperature that change depending on the season.

10 Where are the climate zones?
The Tropic Zones: between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn and are hot all year long.

11 Why is this important? We need to know about climate zones because they change how people live in different places.

12 Jeopardy We are going to play jeopardy today in class.
How to play: I will give the answer two a question and you need to write the question I am asking Example: the slide will say: “This climate is cold all year around.” You will answer: “What is the Polar Zone?” On your white board.

13 Jeopardy These five latitude lines effect climate.
Correct answer: What are the Equator, the Tropic of Cancer, the Tropic of Capricorn, the Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle?

14 Jeopardy The three climate zones. (Hint: name them)
Correct answer: What are the Polar Zone, the Temperate Zone and the Tropical Zone?

15 Jeopardy The climate zone that is at the poles. (Hint: name which zone it is) Correct Answer: Where is the polar zone?

16 Jeopardy The weather/ temperature in the polar zones
Correct answer: What is cold?

17 Jeopardy The weather/ temperature in the tropical zones
Correct Answer: What is hot?

18 Jeopardy What the weather is normally like in a place.
Correct Answer: What is Climate?

19 Independent Practice 1. True or false the three climate zones are the Polar Zones, the Tropical Zones and the Temperate zones. 2. Name the four latitude lines that effect climate. 3. What is the temperature like in the tropic zones? How is the temperate climate different from the tropical climate?

20 Exit Ticket 1. True or false. the equator is only latitude line that effects climate. 2. Name two of the three climate zones. 3. What is the temperature like in the polar zones? How is the arctic climate different from the tropical climate?
