2
Introduction of Microscopes Microscopic – invisible to naked eye 1595 Magnified images approximately 3x – 10x
3
Compound Microscopes Uses natural or artificial light to see objects
4
Parts of a Compound Microscope Ocular lens Objective lens Low, Medium, and High power Body Arm Base Focus Coarse adjustment Fine adjustment Stage Stage clip Stage controls Light source Diaphragm
5
Handling Microscope Carry the microscope with BOTH hands – one underneath the Base and one on the Arm. Always store it with the Low Power Objective Lens above the Diaphragm.
6
Total Magnification Ocular power x objective power = Total Magnification
7
Field of View Measured in µm Can be measured using ruler or graph paper
8
Preparing Wet Mounts Normally use water Starting at an angle, place coverslip gently on the specimen. NO AIR BUBBLES
9
Electron Microscopes Uses electrons instead of light Transmission Electron Microscope Allows user to see through object Scanning Electron Microscope Allows user to see the surface of object
