Ecological Interactions
2
Cornell Notes and Q’s: Take 2 pages of Cornell Notes based on the information you learn about in this presentation. Answer the Questions you see included on the slides. (Q:) These notes will be included in a notebook check. 20 pts There will be also be a quiz at the end…
3
Interactions in Ecology Organisms interact with each other in specific ways. In this presentation, you will learn about these specific interactions. Learning Target: I can define and give examples of ecological interactions in nature
4
Predator / Prey Predators hunt and eat prey. Predators are often 2 nd or 3 rd level consumers. Prey is often 1 st or 2 nd level consumers. Examples: Snake and mouse Lion and zebra Wolf and moose Q: Can you give 3 more examples?
5
Angler Fish video Watch the 2 minute video about the predatory angler fish here: http://tpt.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.stru.a ngler/anglerfish/ http://tpt.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.stru.a ngler/anglerfish/ (copy and paste the link above into a new internet window) Q: In ONE sentence, summarize what you saw in the video.
6
Symbiosis Symbiosis is when 2 species interact with each other in a way that either HELPS, HARMS, or DOESN’T AFFECT them. There are 3 types of Symbiosis: Mutualism Both species interacting BENEFIT from the interaction Parasitism One species BENEFITS, one species is HARMED Commensalism One species BENEFITS, one is completely unaffected
7
Mutualism Examples: Bees and Flowers The bees gets food from the flower (pollen), the flowers get pollinated by the bees flying around from flower to flower. Clownfish and Sea Anemone The clown fish gets protection from predators from the stinging anemone, the anemone gets cleaned by the clownfish eating the debris in the spines. Q: Can you name another example?
8
Parasitism Examples: Dogs and Ticks The dog is HARMED by the tick (diseases, itch, rash) and the tick BENEFITS from the blood (food) of the dog. Fish and lampreys The fish is HARMED by the lamprey (leech) and the lamprey BENEFITS from the blood (food) of the fish Q: Can you name another example?
9
Gross Parasite Video! Watch the 4 minute video of the grossest parasite you’ll see…the tongue-infesting parasite. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/tongue-parasite.html (copy and paste the link above into a new internet window) Q: What is unique or special about the tongue infesting parasite? Name 2 things.
10
Commensalism Examples: Barnacles and Whales Barnacles get a free home and a ride on the whale’s skin, but the whale is not affected by them at all. Pearlfish and sea cucumber Pearlfish get a free home in the anus of the sea cucumber, but the sea cucumbers don’t care at all. Q: Can you name another example?
11
Intraspecific Interactions Individuals of the same species compete for the same resources in an ecosystem. (food, water, space, mates) Herds, flocks, packs
12
Interspecific Interactions Individuals of different species compete for the same resources in an ecosystem (food, water, space)
