3
Project Description To design and manufacture a cold water waste recovery system for a shower head.
4
Motivation There are third world countries that do not have a readily supply of water available. In the U.S., alone, 1 household annually waste an estimated 3 thousands kilowatts of energy from hot water running down the drain. With an average cost of $0.07 per kilowatt-hour, this equates to an annual waste of 210 dollars.
5
Background Change to the plumbing to allow cold water to be feed back into the system. (Patent 5274860) Reuse of waste shower water for filling a toilet cistern.( Patent 2305899) Water temperature regulator that guides water having a temperature lower than the desired value to a storage for reuse. (Patent 609213)
6
Objective Design a convenient showering apparatus that does not waste water.
7
Customer Needs
8
Functionality Reuse the cold water Prevent the loss of hot water Hot water remains at the shower head until ready for use Comfortable water temperature discharge. Statically sound ( no vibration) Minimal use of electricity
9
Ergonomics Easy to install and service Do it yourself installation No need for a plumber or electrician Small enough to fit in a shower Operate well under showering conditions

Testing Scenarios Normal use – User takes a hot shower for a duration period long enough for the tank to empty. Short shower – User takes a hot shower for a duration period too short for the tank to empty. Cold shower – User takes a cold shower for an unspecified amount of time. Bypass/Unpowered – User desires an immediate supply of water and wishes to bypass the tank.
