WHAT IS YOUR DESK MADE OF?

MATTER

Anything that has mass, and takes up space. Everything in the physical world is made up of matter. ……so then what makes up matter?

ATOMS The smallest particle that can still be identified as the matter it came from is an atom. It is important to note that atoms are always in motion.

PARTS OF AN ATOM Nucleus, is a dense area in the center of an atom. It is made up of two things, protons and neutrons. Outside the nucleus we have electrons that move around the nucleus. …why?

CHARGES Protons have a positive charge Neutrons have a neutral charge Electrons have a negative charge …so what happens if you have more than one atom?

MORE THAN ONE ATOM If we have multiple atoms that are the same type of atom they are what we call an element. If we have multiple atoms that are different but are not bound/bonded together this creates a mixture. …what happens if they are bonded together?

MOLECULES Molecules are two or more atoms that are bonded together. A good example of this is water. Water is comprised of 3 atoms to create one molecule. Remember H 2 O. …how big is an atom?

REVIEW What makes up most everything in the universe? What is matter made up of? What are atoms made up of? What charge does a proton have? Neutron? Electron? If I have multiple of the same atoms that are not bonded together, what do I have? If I have multiple atoms that are different but not bonded, what do I have? If I have atoms bonded together what do I have?

REVIEW What atom is this?

DEMONSTRATION

SO WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE ATOMS IN THESE?

STATES All atoms are constantly moving…yes constantly. The as we add energy the atoms move faster. As we take away energy we can get atoms moving slower. This is what creates the three states of matter  Solid, Liquid, and Gas

REVIEW Everything is made up of matter, which is anything with mass and takes up space (volume). All mater is made up of Atoms, which have a nucleus filled with protons and neutrons, and have electrons moving around the nucleus. When atoms bond they create a molecule. We can cause a substance to change its state by adding or taking away its energy.

REVIEW QUESTIONS 1)Describe the movement of particles in a solid, liquid, and a gas. 2)In bright sunlight, dust particles in the air appear to dart about. What causes this effect? 3)If you could break up a carbon dioxide molecule, would you still have carbon dioxide. Explain your answer. 4)Write the headings Matter and Not Matter on your paper. Place each of these terms in the correct category: wood, water, metal, air, light, and sound. 5)How does tea flavor spread from a tea bag throughout a cup of hot water.
