Accelerated Reader Choose the right books! Get rewards for reading! Become a better reader!
2
“…the single biggest factor in school success is reading for pleasure…”
3
Star Reading Test Completed once every term Will give students a reading age Will give students a ZPD Will help students to choose the right books
5
ZPD and Book Levels A ZPD is a reading range for each individual student. Book levels are on the side of most books. Students should choose books based on their ZPD. You can check book levels at home using the online AR Book Finder (web address in student planners)

Book Level Labels
7
After reading… Students: Take a Reading Quiz online - quiz will test them on the book they have read. Should take the test no more than a few days after they have finished the book.
8
The Reading Quiz
9
Rewards Each time you take a quiz, you accumulate book points. Points are based on the length of the book – not the difficulty. The more questions you answer correctly, the more points you’ll score. Accumulate points to win prizes and certificates.
10
More importantly though… AR will help our students to become a better readers. For GCSEs in Year 10, you need to have a Reading Age of about 15 to be able to properly understand exams for all subjects. Some students have moved up three reading years in a 12 month period.
11
At school… Most students have now completed the STAR Reading Test. Students have opportunities to go to the library to choose a book that matches their ZPD. Time will be provided in registration and tutorials to read. Students can take quizzes during registration, tutorials and library lessons.
12
Home responsibilities Students should ALWAYS have a book to read – one that is appropriate to their reading age. Take quizzes online at home where possible. Read approximately 20 minutes a night at home.

Remember… “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” Dr Seuss
